My top ten Rieslings of the year and a thank you

First of all this has been a great year for Rockss and Fruit and I appreciate all of you for tuning in every now and then and of course thanks all of the comments. It has been a great year and I am extremely happy that out of boredom during my unemployed haze I started this blog. Many improvements are slated for next year including maybe some better grammar and spelling . . .but we'll see about that. I like that rustic, unfined and unfiltered edge to Rockss and Fruit.

Onward and upward as they say and as I have a penchant for lists, here is a list of my top ten Rieslings of the year.

  • 1998 Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Spatlese - stunningly and eerily perfect
  • 1992 Reichsgraf Von Kesselstat Berncasteler Doctor Spatlese - a revelation at lunch at the estate
  • 2006 Reinhold Haart Wintricher Ohligsberg Auslese Erstes Lage - very young but oh so rich and mealy and earthy and citrussy
  • 1998 Donnhoff Schlossbockelheimer Kupfergrube Spatlese - the copper mine in full bloom with a sick and twisted texture
  • 2006 Wegeler Berncasteler Doctor Spatlese - the best Wegeler I have ever had from one of my favorite vineyards in the Mosel
  • 2006 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Spatlese # 5 - Best young Schaefer Spatlese I have ever had
  • 1981 Karthauserhof Spatlese "Sang" - this is smoke in a bottle, barely any fruit and tertiary city
  • 1989 Wittman Morstein Spatlese - pulled from Phillipe Wittman's private cellar on my visit and proves great dry Riesling benefits from age
  • 1983 Le Gallais (Egon Muller) Wiltinger Braune Kupp Spatlese - served at an event just recently and this was signing with loads of green apple and dazzling purity
  • 2006 Emrich-Schonleber Monziger Halenberg Spatlese - An incredible expression of Nahe with dynamic thick 2006 fruit

So Lyle,

When are you going to taste Finger Lakes Rieslings? Or are you a non-believer?

Haven't had enough to make a qualitative comment.

Wow four 06s, Schaefer's wines are very tasty in 06, much better then the 05s. I don't believe I have had a Reichsgraf before, have to check them out. You know that now having done a top 10 list your in Marvin Shanken's pocket. Happy New Year Lyle, and cheers to more success in 08 and an "off vintage" so we can still afford our habit.
