probably not think that is some big whoop but it is major whoop big deal. There are a small number of wines out there that are world class but because of the region or the grape, no normal (sane) importer would buy them as they would need to be hand sold bottle by bottle.
Today is a day I've been looking forward to since I first signed Ziereisen 2 years ago. Because this is the day when I sell my absolute favorite wine from Ziereisen. It's a wine I believe in like no other German wine. I believe it is one of the greatest white wines on the planet. Up there with the top wines from Keller, Roulot, Guiberteau, Roches Neuves and the like. Not only do I not have to sell this wine, most of you will think I'm crazy to offer this wine. Maybe I am. But one thing that is not in debate is the high quality and distinctiveness of this wine.
Today I am honored to offer the top wine at Ziereisen, the 2014 Ziereisen Jaspis Gutedel 10-4 Alte Reben for $104.99 a bottle NET. This wine is an emotionally moving experience. It is the most mineral wine I have ever had. Nothing comes close. If you like fruit, this is a an easy pass. But if you like mineral slathered individual uncompromising wines of the highest quality this is for you. The nose is insane. Like a Domaine Leflaive Grand Cru Burgundy. It is so dense you can cut it with a knife. So layered. Just insane. You'll smell this wine for hours on end as it changes and mystifies your olfactory senses and makes them overload. Lavender and bath soaps seem to come in and out. I have never smelled a white wine that is this aromatically complex. Not even close. It is focused like a laser in the mouth. It is so straight and focused you cannot believe it. Once it is in your palate we are in Chave Blanc land. Or perhaps Haut-Brion Blanc. The wine, when young can be austere but only because of the mineral density. There is not a more densely mineral wine I have ever had. It pushes minerals to places in your mouth you did not know even existed. It is juicy and so dense oh so dense it cannot be believed. It is a targeted and focused palate explosion. Clean like a baby after a bath. The cleanest. The palate is bone dry yet retains a juiciness that is just awe-inspiring. The finish is endless minerals. This is genius wine of the highest degree. I cannot recommend this enough. It's like Haut Brion Blanc/Chave Blanc/Domaine Leflaive but really is uniquely Ziereisen. Only Hanspeter could make a wine like this and have the balls to make it and charge what he does. But when one is confident in one's abilities, you have wines like this. You have to experience this wine. You need to. Just once. If someone buys a case, I'll give it you for $99.99 a bottle so you can share it.
Gutedel is the local name in Baden for Chasselas. Chasselas is a grape found mainly in Alsace, Switzerland and small pockets of the Rhone. Chasselas is one of the oldest grape varieties in the world. It is a wine that cannot be described but I will do my best. The vines are 40+ years old and made from ridiculously minuscule yields. The terroir is all limestone.
Now most of us aren't buying $105 Gutedel and that is where the 2014 Ziereisen Gutedel Steingruble for $24.99 a bottle on a 4-pack comes in. It's Gutedel for the rest of us. This is also from a 100% limestone vineyard. The 2013 version was on the Wine Advocate's 20 Outstanding white and rose values (90+ points). Just insane aromas of grilled nuts, baked pears and so many different types of minerals. It's a $75 nose on a $25 wine. The palate is dense and complex but fresh as a daisy. So juicy and clean with that amazing minerality that Hanspeter can get out of Gutedel. I don't know how he does it. Dry, which is a trademark from Gutedel, yet so intense it's almost too much. But then it is also juicy and lively. There is serious power here and concentration with a big structure as well. So pure. Like fresh spring water from the Rockies. The finish is so mineral and even more earthy which is a surprise. Like tree bark and earth. This wine is the one below the Jaspis 10-4 and there are two levels below it. I cannot emphasize enough how much of a value this is.
This is like 1er Cru white Burg from a top producer for $25. This is a total Lyle trust me wine and this is a total Lyle trust me email. My job could be easier if I didn't try and sell these wines but what's the fun in that?
All I'm gonna say is anybody who buys the Jaspis from this offer will get a special surprise in the Fall shipment.
