Middle-Aged Hirtzberger

Good old SFJoe was kind of enough to drop off a half drunk bottle of 1994 Hirtzberger Riesling Singerriedel Smaragd and it was stunning and I was more than happy to polish it off. Of course with Jamie's help. The nose was a combination of honey, gym sneaker, petrol (hint), daisies and intense mineral. Very pretty nose. A complete nose. Palate was juicy and ripe with pure apricot, mango and vivid minerality. The finish is great as it just dissolves but never dissipates. Fantastic stuff. Maybe a little short in the fruit "intensity" department but I attribute that to possibly being open a bit too long. Otherwise a fascinating wine and one I am very glad to have tried.

  1. I think it may still be suffering a bit from its recent arrival and long voyage. Just a guess.
