A profound bottle of Saumur Champigny and many other wines of significance, importance and semi-profundity

Had an outrageous bottle of 2002 Clos Rougeard last night as I watched Christopher spin out of control on the Sopranos. So Burgundian but so apprently Cabernet Franc. This wine had a panoply of spice and herbs on the nose but also dazzling vivid cherry fruit after aeration. There were so many layers that kept coming out of the woodwork as the wine continually aerated. Drank it out of my new Ravenscroft Grand Cru Burgundy glasses and they really did the trick. The nose was incredibly evocative due to the large size of the glasses. Palate was extremely elegant and soft yet there was fantastic acidity and focus. The finish was long..the fruit was powerful and concentrated but never felt heavy. This was just a baby now but is built for the long haul. This will transform any Cabernet Franc hater into a lover . . . . .

Had a lovely bottle of the 2002 Fritz Haag Braunberger Juffer-Sonnenhur Riesling Kabinett. This wine had a delicate, filigreed nose of slate, chamomile, apple and pear. Palate was delicate and refined with everything in direct proportion with everything else. So balanced and creamy with nice sneaky persistent acidity. Kept improving and gaining depth as the night went on and also started to show signs of maturity. Lovely wine.

  1. Hey Lyle,
Which Clos Rougeard bottle was it? Les Poyeux?

  2. Probably the best one for drinking "now". Do you have it stock at CSW?

BTW, great looking second case you picked out for Asimov. Chidaine's 05's are off the charts, and the Brun L'Ancienne has to be the best $12 bottle of red wine in the world. Well, for me it is, anyway.

  3. Actually we have a tiny bit of Clos Rougeard "Poyeaux" which is an awkward place right now but ultimately will be the better wine down the road.

The Brun is the best $12 bottle of wine. I agree. The '06 is good. Just tasted it today but in the "nervy" style of the '04.
