Armand Rousseau . . . .
yup...take them off their heralded mantle please. I know everybody thinks Rousseau can do no wrong and this is not 100% Rousseaus fault but their 2005 prices are just ridiculous. We can also blame the people in between Rousseau and their clients. We all knew the Chambertin and the Chambertin Clos de Beze would be pricey in 2005 plus maybe the Clos St. Jacques but what the hell is going on with the Clos de la Roche, Ruchottes-Chambertin, Gevrey 1er Cru "Cazetiers" and Charmes friggin' Chambertin?
Just take a glance at wine-searcher and you see the 2005 Charmes-Chambertin at $259, the Chambertin for $1000, the Beze for $1422 and the Mazy for $500. You can buy the '04 Mazy at Flickinger Wines for $80,. Is the '05 worth that much more? Absolutely not.
I got an offer from Europe a while back and was outraged at the prices. The offers since then have been the same or a bit more. Don't get me wrong as I love Rousseau and I tasted the 2005's. Very good wines. My notes are posted here. But I also tasted the 2001's and you can get the 2001 Chambertin for under $350 a bottle and that is where my money is versus a cool g-spot for the 2005. I love Rousseau and I lament again about how pricey they have become in relation to what they once were priced. Hell even the 2004's rock and are downright cheap in comparison to the 2005's.
And here I thought that the $142 was a case price for the Bèze...
