Had the 1994 Wegeler Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese which was solid but definetly not profound. Clean, balanced, ripe and very pure with nice mid palate density. Nose had nice damp forest floor, peach, minerals. For the money it is a solid example of aged Riesling from a great site. Well....actually one thing that annoyed me a bit about the wine was the short finish which....someone please correct me if I am wrong...is due to what part of Sonnenuhr this is from. Sonnenuhr was expanded and I know some sections are not as choice as others. For example I prefer JJ Prum, Weins Prum, Schaefer over Richter, S.A. Prum, Selbach-Oster and such.
Also had another bottle of the 2005 Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Kabinett which was not as good as the previous bottle. It was a bit closed and seemed flat. Could this potentially be starting to go to sleep?
Not a very exciting post but I know people were sick of looking at Calvin Coolidge.
Totally agree on the Zilli. My girl determined that this was the greatest wine ever made, and while I did not agree, I greatly enjoyed the case or so we drank. Pure and clean and big, but had enough powerful acid to not feel bad about being a kabinett. Recently, just as you describe. Definitely beginning the slumber
ReplyDeleteDennis,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all. Get back to work! Bobby would freak out if he knew you were reading MY blog. But besides that . . .how many points did you give it?
I agree 100% about the '94 Wegeler, which I have had twice: no length, and not profound. But decent value for the dough. According to Stephen Brook the vineyard was enlarged in 1971.
ReplyDelete'94 Zilliken on the other hand...yum yum...
