Top 10 reasons I am excited to go to France and Germany a week from today

1. Unpasteurized under 60-day aged cheese
2. The bread in Germany is better than France and don't even front on it
3. Cross three wine regions of my list - Beaujolais/Maconnaise/Burgundy
4. Go to a natural wine festival in a trendy seaside town called Deauville
5. I get to visit Georges Descombes
6. I get to travel with Joe Dressner and hopefully live to survive and blog about it
7. I get to go to Baden and Franken again and visit Furst, Heger and Wirsching
8. I get to potentially fall to my death in the vineyards in Uhlen & Winningen
9. The never-ending quest for water that is NOT sparkling
10. Sitting in a cafe in France and right next to me is someone feeding their dog a lardon in a seat next to them. I love it!!

Among people I will be visiting will be Rapet, Descombes, Desvignes, Michel Tete, Clos de la Roilette, Eric Texier, J.P. Brun, Meo-Camuzet, Jean & Gilles Lafouge, Knebel, Clemens-Busch, Van Volxem, Bouvier, Bart, Bouzerau, and many more.

I am so excited that the days seem longer than usual. There will hopefully be reports from the road but those keyboards over there are very wacky. Much blogging between now and then.

  2. "Unpasteurized under 60-day aged cheese"

Lyle, we call these raw milk cheeses. Get them while you can. The EU wants to go the route of the US.

You get Hazardous Duty Pay for this, right?

  4. Jack,

In my younger days as a cheese monger I lived for this shit. Cannot wait to dig into the Pont l'Eveque, Munster, Morbier and the stinky-ass Epoisses.

  7. Hey Mao,

Fiering thread is gone and why did you link the Leve/Zachy's thread? Maybe I am dim today?

  8. I love that you mentioned the quest for non-sparkling water. I just cannot understand the fascination with bubbles in the water.

  14. There is Parisian bread and there is Parisian bread.

Most Parisian bread is fairly blah.

Some of the artisanal producers make some of the best bread in the world.

I cannot say that German bread is better or worse bc I have not been there. But top Parisian bread is as good as I can imagine bread could be.

  17. I am soooooooo jealous! I want to go to Germany this sumer and visit Knebel myself. They make wines of such beauty. Not a loud, screeching beauty, but a quiet seductive one. I can go on and on. Enjoy!

  18. German bread is indeed much better than French bread. NYC bread is even better than French bread, for that matter. Anyhoo, have a nice trip.
