The world has figured it out that Battenfeld Spanier is one of the top estates in the Rheinhessen. The wines are made by HO Spanier who made the 98-100 2019 Point GG Riesling at Kühling-Gillot.

Frauenberg is, for me, the most perfect of the Battenfeld Spanier wines. The level of balance and elegance you get from this bottling is really on the level of top level Burgundy. The minerality is phenomenally clean and precise. It's always been my favorite of the 3 Grosses Gewachs from this estate.

Demand is through the roof for these wines in Germany and the rest of Europe. Honestly, we are quite fortunate that we get an allocation as large as we do.

This is the first year that the 2020 Battenfeld Spanier Frauneberg Grosses Gewachs is allocated at $61.99 on a 4-pack.

The 2020 Frauenberg got 96 points from Stuart Piggott and he is right on target for this wine. It is one of the stars of the GGs at Battenfeld Spanier in 2020. I tasted a bottle, well, I'll cop to it, I drank every sip of my sample bottle over 2 days. I knew it would be my only shot at it so I milked it. The wine is glorious. The best wine I've ever had from Battenfeld Spanier. Just a harmonious, complex, refined and very deep wine that once it gets air delivers an emotional experience. It's one of those wines. My note is below. I left out the F-bomb.

nose so pretty and so pure one needs new words to describe it but I will try with my mere old words. A beautiful perfume that is transcendent. In every way. An amazing caramel nougat. Airy, gorgeous, perfumed and insanely clear minerality. Just sick. Some smoke. Wood shavings. Not oak, but woodshop. Some clearly defined citrus. Wet stones and earth. It reeks and I mean reeks of terroir.

The palate has a very serious and very major coreInsane citrus that is driving me crazy. So pure. So ephemeral. So clean. The nose or the palate? What is better? I can't stop asking myself. It's even. The core of fruit, minerals and saltiness is unreal. This has elite elegance to it. It's backwards but beautiful. Not many wines are like that. It has PERFECT balance. 9.9 balance. The level of complexity and texture might push it over the edge. But then the salt kicks in. And the lingering of the finish. This got a 9.8 ultimately. Age might make it perfect.

Terrific on Day 2. Wow. Honeyed, airy, mineral, salty, insane with specific mineral depth. Like a real rock smell. Some black tea as Well. Terroir is screaming today. Confectionary sugar. Mirabelle plum. Brown sugar. Fine brown sugar though. Confectionary. Lush, nervy and tense as I am on a first date. Superb purity and intensity. Sappy. Long. Amazingly pure and balanced. Really long, so fine and refined. Stellar. This is a dream.

Below is Stuart Piggott’s review.

"Some people still associate fruitiness and roundness with Rheinhessen wines, but this dry riesling GG has uncompromisingly radical minerality. Tons of dried-flower and herb aromas, but also some lovely stone fruit and citrusy freshness that lifts the long, diamond-bright and salty finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." - 96 Points, Stuart Piggott
