The Buffet Style

2020 was a crazy year at Fass Selections as we started selling 3 wineries that are absolutely
incredible. Many of you have been drinking the wines from Brisset and going somewhat crazy as the non billionaires have not had Burgundy that good before.

The wines of Buffet are stylistically a bit different. They are a bit rounder and fuller with giving juicy fruit. They are incredibly well made but you notice the fruit more. In any other year, they would have been the talk of the list. These wines are ridiculously underpriced for the quality

Wine Preamble

If you could pick the perfect storm in a bottle of Burgundy what would it be? I'd say, the combination of producer, vineyard and vines. Well, today.... today I have one wine that hits it out of the park on all three fronts.

1) The Most highly regarded vineyard in Pommard

2) Vines that 100 years old, creating some of the most complex, dense, silky and elegant 2019 Red Burgundy I've ever had.

3) A producer who knows how to extract the essence from these miraculous wines but keep the wines elegant.

Make no mistake I believe Pommard inched out Volnay in 2019 as every Pommard I’ve had has been mindbending. Just incredible. Dense yet elegant and unapologetically stoney which is what Pommard is about. There is a fierce minerality in good Pommard that is unmistakable.

The Wines

First up is the 2019 Francois Buffet Pommard 1er Cru "Rugiens" for $71.99 on a 3-pack which comes from 100+ year old vines and they usually only make one barrel but in 2019, they made a bit more and it's actually available that I could reserve some cases. The best deal in Pommard Rugiens. It's not close.

The 2018 Buffet Pommard Rugiens is $168 a bottle from a CA 3-Tier distrubutor.

I am selling one today that is awesome and has the Fass Selections stamp of approval for $71.99 a bottle on a 4-Pack. This wine is STUNNING. With capital letters. Just an insane Rugiens and yes it can be drunk young Obviously this can age as Rugiens is the most age-worthy 1er Cru in Pommard. But because of the lithe, Truchot/Bertheau like style of Francois Buffet this wine was a pleasurable Rugiens to drink young in 2017 but in 2018 because of the depth and structure of the vintage it behaves more like a normal Rugiens that needs 10 years to start drinking. But it’s a return to form in 2019. This can be drunk young! This wine is insane. It is just an amalgam of old vine fruit and character and such insane silkiness.

The Pommard Rugiens in 2019 is an elegant supple beast of a wine that might last and improve for 35 years. It has a silky structure I've rarely seen Burgundies. The 100+ year old vines really strutted their stuff in 2019.

Nose is super stoney, I mean super stoney and earthy. In the first 30 minutes you get some hints of cherry and blackberry fruit. Some feral and gamey notes as well but one call tell it's holding back. You can tell it's about to explode with aroma. Par for the course for Rugiens. Some nice spice after and pound cake aromas. Ok now we are talking. Brilliant sour cherry fruit and late season cherry all mixed in. Now just mineral air, gorgeous crushed rocks and so much more. Dynamite! Just an insane nose. It really gets going after 3-4 hours. Huge classic Rugiens nose. Super super stoney, matchstick, so stoney, primal stoniness. Candied earthy herbal perfume. Wow. Candied licorice. Impossibly complex. Iodine? Salty. All rocks and raspberry crushed on those rocks. Spice, mint and mineral. So perfumed and clean. So pure. It just gets more insane and complex as it aerates. It's just so so good. Meaty, stoney, smokey, flinty, floral. So many nuances. There's 25% whole cluster so that means much more aromatic complexity to come with age. The nose keeps getting better and better and it is a crazy symphonic perfume. A masterpiece.

The palate is chewy, dense, firm, creamy and elegant with gorgeous pure black cherry and mid season cherry fruit and brilliant freshness. Substantial structure and yet the tannins are so fine. Wow it’s also so elegant and fine but also muscular and has epic sweetness. But finishes Stoney with classic Rugiens pulverized rock dust. Just a stunning bottle of Rugiens. Velvety, citric and perfectly balanced. Ripe and sweet tannins. Really epic. Super pure. Big structure. Just ridiculous. Huge concentrated red/black fruit and unreal explosiveness but it is so so fine and so nimble. The density, the elegance, the salinity the amazing minerality, the sweetness and almost treacly and floral quality of the fruit is unreal on the palate. Yet it's all silk. I cannot emphasize enough how Marc-Olivier Buffet gets density and silkiness and they are substantial wines but also so finesse and so elegant. Class in a glass. Super juicy and late breaking silky tannins that just grip your mouth and you never want them to leave. And they don't. It's a baby but it's also so so expressive. It shows terrific depth like you will not believe. That's the greatness of Rugiens. The depth is incomparable. Stony. Small berry fruit. It will keep for 25+ years and has the most amazing intensity, length and detail. This is the whole package.
