Most of you have heard of Enderle & Moll. For most of you that means that you have bought Liason which is the only wine of theirs that I regularly sell to the entire list. These wines are highly sought after both in Germany and in the States.
- One restaurant has their top wines at $1,000 a bottle.
- Another has them on a secret list only given to top customers.
These wines are that culty. They are most famous for their reds but the whites are absolute
magic. The whites are even more underpriced than the reds because they don't believe in charging for scarcity and the whites are less expensive to make than the reds. My guess is that they could at least double their prices and sell out but they don't.
They are great guys and so in tune with the work they do like nothing I've ever seen. The focus and the resultant wines never ever ceases to astonish me. They have that perfect balance between being from Munchweir and also having the magical touch. My direct model works wonders with this estate as the value is just beyond anything.
The 2020 Vintage
As many of you know this is an elegant and classic vintage vintage that has crisp acids, vivid fruit and clarity of all elements. The harmony and definition is terrific. E & M are making huge strides with their whites and they are getting to the level of the reds. They have succeeded in 2020 Buy all you can.
The Wines
Up first I have the 2020 Enderle & Moll Grauburgunder for as little as $21.99 on a 4-pack. This price cannot be beat. This is skin contact Pinot Gris with an insane, alluring texture and so much zest and minerality. The color is darker than the other wines due to the darker color of Pinot Gris skins. It makes it more photogenic. After 15 minutes it gets going and it is all minerals and aromatic citrus skins.
The palate is insanely refreshing and pure. Citrus fruits and ripe apples galore but oh so delicate. Loads of spice. Cardamom and clove. Terrific opulence and a zesty freshness. Very grapefruit dominant but also tangerine etc. It has awesome savory quality to it as well. Lovely balance and freshness. Elegant. Really elegant. Complex, juicy and elegant and just stays with you. Terrific. A lot to love. 17 was more powerful and this is more nimble but doesn't lack power.
Every time I sell this wine I have to use the note I found on Delectable by the best wine note taker in the land, yup, Keith Levenberg, who gave the 2014 Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) a 9.8 (HUGE SCORE FOR KEITH) and wrote an astonishing note. The '20 IMHO is better but in the same vein if a bit more precise and linear.
Here is Keith's note.
"This is one of the most exciting wines I have had in ages and so totally in my wheelhouse for what I want out of this category that I could stand to have a keg of this on tap in my kitchen. I am tempted to rate this 10/10 as I literally cannot imagine it being more perfect or more satisfying, and am just coming (slightly) more down to earth on account of the fact that I will admit that even the greatest skin contact white wine ever made is maybe not at the level of the 1945 Romanee-Conti. That said, this is the greatest skin contact white wine ever made. It's what they all should be. The level of freshness just knocks your socks off. It's like a Super Bowl Gatorade dunk for the palate. The fruit flavors are succulent and unabashedly delicious - lots of peach, some melon, and unidentified other stuff contributing to the type of tropical refreshment that would make you want to put this in a mai tai glass with a little umbrella in it, and with a texture as sharp and acute as an icicle. The hue at the moment is a luminous salmon - even the color is enticing. It is not "orange wine." My complaint with many skin contact whites is that they pick up their depth and intrigue at the expense of freshness and drinkability. But here there is no tradeoff. This has the freshness of a dozen oysters and the drinkability is off the charts. Guzzling it is more like it."- Keith Levenberg on Delectable
Up next I've got a stunning and very rare wine. The 2019 Enderle & Moll Weissburgunder which can be had for $21.99 a bottle on a 4-Pack. They only made 2,000 bottles of this and they gave me an ok allocation (for which I am very grateful). The pure Weissburgunder from the boys is rare and I'm always excited about this wine. This has a long maceration like the "Pur" Muller Thurgau and then some skin contact.
Gorgeous aromas of grilled nuts, citrus and pear. Also after air some apricots, peaches and watermelon. Even a hint of very fine honey. Palate is at once rich and also tangy with apricots, pears and apples intermingled with gorgeous deep citrusy. It's rich and zesty. The acid these guys got in 2020 is a testament to how talented they are. The palate also echoes the nose with flavors of nuts, awesome skin contact tannins. The structure is taut and delicate and the wine comes across as very noble with almost a Grand Cru vibe. This is gorgeous and will also be allocated.
I'm going to guess that this wine will need a lot of air and last days on end open.
