Has some holy wine credentials here. The top of it's price-point for it's category is a hard flame to carry. We've got 100 year old vines. Some are older. Most is sourced from the Cote de Py, the best spot in Morgon, and he also has added sulfur. How much? I am not sure but more than his normal cuvee. Also this is the first vintage Kermit Lynch has imported into the US. Or maybe this is the first vintage of the wine? Some help here from you naturalistas out there would be great. Anyway it's the first time the wine has hit US shores. So there is big-time geek cred here, almost hype. This is the Lebron James, Stephen Strasbourg and Sidney Crosby of Beaujolais all rolled into one. So did it live up to it's enormous hype? No. Of course not. Barely anything does, and this wine does not. Day 1 it was utterly miserable wine. Super-hot, cough drop fruit, and all acid for the texture. Very diffuse and a barely existent nose of some kirsch and ethanol. No earth or mineral scents at all. It just got more closed as the night continued. Right at the end of the night it showed a bit of promise. It seemed to snap into shape and wink at you with it's hinting structure and texture. It became more streamlined but still I could not pass full judgement as this is a new wine from very old vines and had some sulfur in it, so on day 2 and day 3 it could turn from an ugly duckling to a swan. So here I am after the wine has been open roughly 25 hours. It is the wines 25th hour before judgement is partially passed. As an aside 25th Hour is the best Spike Lee movie since Do The Right Thing and should be seen by all serious Spike Lee fans. I know he sucked balls forever but he still had one more good one in him with 25th hour. Back to the tasting impression. The nose is much more Pinot-like on day 2. Morey-like. Dusty, spicey, minty, red fruits and pretty nice. A large improvement over yesterday's horror show. There is still a touch of over-ripeness that I don't find appealing at this point. Hopefully that will be gone tomorrow. The palate is elegant, with some warmth peeking out the edges and hitting you on the finish pretty hard. The fruit is pretty monotone and blends well with the weak earth/mineral notes. Heat is still very much a factor, but not THE factor. Still takes away from the wine. I mean this is 14% Beaujolais!! It just sounds wrong. I'll reserve judgement until tomorrow but right now this wine seems like a hose. Rarity does not always make for a good vinous experience, especially when dealing with Russian Roulette Beaujolais-master Marcel Lapierre.

2003 Clos Ste. Hune
Reds

1998 Olga Raffault 'Les Picasses'
There might be more that I can't remember right now....
Curious, do you give all wines the same amount of leeway when you evaluate them? Seems to me that had the wine been from California or Australia, you would have dismissed it outright and just given it the dump.
ReplyDeleteMatt,
ReplyDeleteYou meant ROFLMAO?
'03 CSH is gross. Had it.
How was Cairanne Blanc? Used to like that wine.
I;ve never even seen a bottle fo '98 Raffault Les Piccasses.
Paul,
I rarely, if ever, buy or open CA or AUS wine in my house, but If i did I would give it a shot if I thought there was a possibility of improvement. I've been tasting wine 15+ years and I an tell if I wine will improve overnight. I have had great examples of Gamay on day 2 or 3, especially from Beaujolais. I love Barolo, for example, but I know, Nebbiolo is a highly oxidative grape, thus it always sucks on day 2 and usually smells like laundry detergent. I would tend to open more from AUS than CA as those Margaret River wines or Clare Valley Rieslings tend to improve for days, but honestly most AUS or CA wine don't last even three hours in the glass. Yes, there are exceptions like Clare Valley Riesling, but they are few and far between.
Also I give this wine lee-way as you claim, because it has major geek cred, is from 100+ year old vines, and many have told me it needs days to open, plus I saw it incrementally improving as evidenced by my last sip. It was better yesterday, but still alcohol dominated. We'll see what day three brings.
Also I am not a big drinker. This was opened with one other person who had it twice before. Once it was genius and the other time it was terrible. So there are mitigating factors here that come into play.
Not happy to hear this, first negative comments I've read. I'll keep my fingers crossed for day Three.
ReplyDeleteTWG,
ReplyDeleteIll have a glass in an hour or two. About to start up on some antibiotics for a month so going on the wagon. So I'll have the glass before.
Sorry to hear about your hiatus. I wish you good health.
ReplyDelete'01 Cairranne blanc was really, really good. I bought 3 bottles back in the day and let 'em rest. The first two weren't great over the last 2-3 years. The last one I left as a flyer, and it really paid off. Fresh, bright and mineral. It was totally seemless
ReplyDeleteWe also had a stellar bottle of '85 Stony Hill Gewurzt. It was the best aged Gewurzt I've ever tasted. Dry(ish) lithe, mineral driven and not at all floral or vulger. Stayed fresh for 3 days in the open bottle.
I'm not sold that the '03 CSH is garbage. It's totally off the wall for young CSH. To be honest, it reminds me of '76 mosel's. (which I don't love)
The '98 raffault was pretty damn good. Not the greatest Raffault i've had, but elegant and aromatic.
The '76 Gigondas was a show stopper. My favorite southern rhone vintage of all time. I've had at least a half a dozen great, energetic wines.
Hope you are well.
"Nebbiolo is a highly oxidative grape, thus it always sucks on day 2 and usually smells like laundry detergent."
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean one should not decant Barolo?
You can decant Barolo but I wouldn't decant for more than 10 hours or so. I am never a big decanter guy as i drink slow.
ReplyDeleteIuli,
ReplyDeleteI like '78 and '81 in the South.
I love cairanne blanc and always buy some when i can find it. Richaud's '01 was an insane bottle.
Haven't had Raffault in a while. Have '02 I'm laying down, should try whatever the current release is.
I hate '03 whites in Europe. It is what it is.
marcel's been doing that cuvee for quite some time now, but they need time. had a 05 recently that was great, maybe they need time...
