Classic, Electric 2004 Vintage
"The sun even shines on a dog's ass some days" - Sidney Dean (White Men Can't Jump)
Translation: some days, even I get lucky.
Old time list members remember the brilliant quartet of Keller wines we offered back in our first and second years for literally almost no money. Keller Von der Fels 2004/2005 and Keller Spatlese Trocken S 2004/2005 were all offered for way too little money! Story was it was an old Keller distributor that could not move the wines and they have been sitting in a warehouse in the Napa area since around 2005/2006. Can you say perfect storage? So we sold them. And made many, many people happy. There was a fifth wine in that stash as well that we wanted to offer but each time I tasted it, it was not quite ready to drink. Well, the last bottle I tasted was so stunning, that I knew that time had come. The wine was utterly brilliant and singing like you would not believe.
There are 3 winemakers in the Rheinhessen that have been at the top of the heap in terms of reputation: Keller, our own Battenfeld Spanier and Wittman. Today, we finally offer the third of the trio. The Wittman I've always wanted to sell. I've always loved his wines and have visited the estate back in 2006. The style here is powerful, mineral, ageworthy Rieslings from some of the top sites in the Rheinhessen. They have been organic and biodynamic longer than almost anyone in Germany. These wines NEED age. They DEMAND age.
Today I am thrilled to offer one of the best aged Riesling values I have ever offered . Today I am honored to offer the 2004 Wittman Westhofener Riesling Trocken "S" for as little as $22.99 on a 4-pack. Compare the 2007 at $43.99. Super aged Riesling nose. Caramel. Orange peel. Really rich. Palate is deep. Insanely deep. Rich with hints of caramel and brown butter. Still sparkles on the palate. Coats the sides of the mouth with richness. This wine is great with rich food. Shows what old Rheinhessen is all about. The 04 "S" is an electric wine with brilliant minerality in harmony with waves of fruit and the beautiful crisp 2004 acidic kick. This is a wine to bring to a tasting to wow your wine friends. It is not easy to find 12 year old top quality dry German riesling.
This is the wine that is just below Wittman's insane Grosses Gewachs/Grand Cru wines. It tends to need a good number of years in the bottle before it is drinking perfectly.
It still has dynamic structure which is the hallmark of the 2004 vintage in the Rheinhessen along with stunning minerality. Many German wine insiders say the Rheinhessen has not had a vintage like '04 since. 2015 is obviously great but more in the mold of 1990 rather than '04. '08 comes close in style but 2004 has a bit more fruit and a skoche less acid than 2008. Believe me there is acid and electricity in this wine, but not nuclear levels like 2008 can get. 2004 next to the aforementioned 2008 is the best vintage of the "naughts" in the Rheinhessen and many say it is superior to 2008 but not many shout it from the rooftops as 2004's from the Rheinhessen are not exactly the easiest wines to find so '08 is more talked about. It happens. But if you want to see what the fuss is about 2004 in the Rheinhessen at a price that cannot be beat on a wine you cannot find anywhere else except here, you've hit the jackpot.
