going to pop the inbox like an Uzi submachine gun. Yes, this is a Beaune Premier Cru with Burghound 90 point approval for under $30. And yes, it's from 2014 which is shaping up to be an incredible vintage in Burgundy for both reds and whites. And yes, it's from a fantastic winemaker with great terroir. I hacked my margins to get this under $30 on 4 so everyone ... stock up.
First up I have the 2014 Reyane and Pascal Bouley Beaune 1er Cru "Le Clos de Bas Teurons" for as little as $29.99 on a 4-pack. This is an awesome value for a wine from a site considered to make some of the best Beaunes. This is a special section of Teurons that is a Clos and used to be in the blend of the version auctioned off by the Hospices des Beaune. The wine is simply awesome and so elegant. It is scary elegant. It is an achingly beautiful wine that has a hint of absolutely the right amount of austerity that makes this wine so killer and charming. Because that little austere hint with the silken texture, super refined aromas is a lovely contrast and is why it is so utterly Burgundian. It is why I love Burgundy and why I love Cote de Beaune especially. Sappy sweet fruit on the blue/black side but also tons of morello cherries on the finish. It has firm sap, structure and tannins but what is truly amazing is how finesse driven this wine is while also delivering stupendous purity and concentration. One does not find wines in Burgundy for $30 that deliver this much finesse. Long, elegant finish but seriously haunting mid palate which one gets lost in, 90 points from BH. $30 1er Cru from legit terroir is unheard of in Burgundy. Here is his note below.
"A perfumed and elegant nose consists of spiced plum, dark cherry and soft earth nuances. There is a lovely sense of purity to the lilting and particularly fine middle weight flavors where the supporting tannins are refined and well-integrated on the balanced, clean and mildly austere finish. A Beaune of finesse." - 90 BH
Today I also have their monopole, the 2014 2014 Reyane and Pascal Bouley 1er Cru Volnay "Les Grands Champs" for $49.99 on 3. The vineyard is mostly village level but their monopole is in a special section and is the only part classified as 1er Cru. It is a very special wine and arguably with the Clos du Chenes their top Volnay. It is the pinnacle of elegance in their lineup and has some of the sexiest and silkiest tannins imaginable. This is the Cru I would serve to show someone the finesse of Volnay. It is a very special wine in 2014 and one I think will age for 15-25 years. It has an outrageously complex nose with intoxicatingly deep and sensual aromas - lilac city. Very intense in the mouth and shows the concentration and power of the vintage but the classic finesse-driven subtlety of this great site. There is power here as well but it is hidden amongst the silky late breaking tannins. This is a monument to the vintage. This is limited and so far as I know, I'm the only person who has over sold this ultra rare 1er Cru. Burghound loves the wine as well and gave it a 91. His review is below.
"Like the Teurons this is attractively perfumed while offering up spicy and softly earthy aromas of lilac, pomegranate and sandalwood. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the delineated and discreetly mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that are shaped by refined tannins on the lingering and well-balanced finale. This isn't quite as concentrated as the Ronceret, and it's a bit less structured, but it's even finer." - 91 BH
When it comes to classic age-worthy Cote de Beaune one need to look no farther than than Reyane and Pascal Bouley along with their son, Pierrick , who is working at the estate full time. He is a very talented, detail oriented and passionate wine-maker and the estate is in good hands for generations to come.
