I've got a confession to make. I love drinking white Burgundy. I was and am still obsessed with it and I drink it just as much as Riesling. When done right it crackles across the palate with electricity and thunder and can put a lens to terroir like nothing else. Burgundy was mapped out hundreds of years ago by monks and these monks knew what they were doing. If a piece of land is named in Burgundy there is a reason for it. Just gotta get it in the right hands. The hands of Daniel & Julien Barraud in Vergisson in the heart of Pouilly-Fuisse are indeed those right hands. These are hands down, as the title says, the best wines in all of the Macon. The three main villages that surround Pouilly are Fuisse and Solutre, where it is said the most full-bodied and opulent wines come from. In Vergisson, the wines tend to be lighter than Fuisse and then there are the wines towards the center of Pouilly which tend to be the most complex. I've been patiently waiting for the 2014 Barrauds to be released and got two small allocations of two profound, yet different Pouilly-Fuisses that also happen to be Burghound's two best QPRs of the vintage as far as White Burgundy goes. These are just must haves for any Burgundy lover and in 2014 they hit it out of the park. I have precious few of these and they will be allocated.Up first is the 2014 Daniel & Julien Barraud Pouilly Fuisse "Les Vercherie - Vielles Vignes for as little as $37.99 on a 3-pack. This is right below the massive rock that overlooks the Barraud home called the "Roche de Vergisson." From 70+ year old vines this is a stunning wine in 2014. Huge minerality and structure. Ample density and beautiful citrus infused fruits. It's elegant, playful and yet very serious as the best 2014s can be. It is long. It is juicy. It is dazzlingly concentrated and tangy. It is opulent yet bracing in its intensity. It got a 92 from BH and his review is below.
"Here the mildly wood-inflected nose flirts with reduction so I would suggest decanting this if you're going to drink a bottle on release. This also possesses a relatively fine mouth feel as the overt mineral streak adds a sense of lift to the broad-shouldered and concentrated flavors that deliver fine depth and even slightly better length. This wine of finesse should also benefit from mid-term cellaring yet be approachable young too if desired. " 92 points Allen Meadows, Burghound
Next up is the 2014 Daniel & Julien Barraud Pouilly-Fuisse "Les Crays - Vieilles Vignes" which can be had for $39.99 on a 3-pack. This wine is also a stunner. I really hope you guys leave some for me. This comes from 60+ year old vines. It is known for its massive almost high end Puligny 1er Cru or even Batard Montrachet levels of concentration and power. This wine is just pure insanity and super intense. This can and will age for 10-12 years and each sip is an experience for this one. Burghound gave it a 93 and his review is below.
"Once again there is a hint of reduction to the mildly phenolic nose so again, aeration is necessary. Otherwise there is terrific intensity and minerality to the delineated medium weight flavors where the minerality is so prominent as to make the mouth feel akin to sucking on small pebbles, all wrapped in a tight, linear and strikingly persistent finish. This beauty appears to have outstanding upside development potential and is highly recommended." 93 points Allen Meadows, Burghound
