6 Questions With Henrick Moebitz of Baden, Germany

6 Questions used to be a regular feature that I used to adore reading in the Sunday NY Times
Magazine.  Now I want to bring the format to Fass Selections by featuring our favorite wine producers and their candid responses to questions. I love this format as it extends beyond the traditional wine questions and shows am irreverent human side to all the people I work with and work with us. I hope you enjoy this series and the latest installment is Henrik Moebitz of his namesake winery outside Freiburg in Baden. This is a very very smart man with very very smart answers.

1- What was the last great wine you had that was not one of yours?
Raveneau Clos 2002 - I don’t drink my own wines often, it would be like an author reading his own books.

2- What was the last great meal you had?
Les Crayeres in Reims. Glorious classical French executed with precision, sensibility and world-class service in a splendid setting.

3- What are you currently streaming on Netflix/Hulu/Amazon that you really enjoy?
No time for watching movies, I prefer reading and listening to music.

4 - If you were prohibited from making wine, what would be your dream job?
My day job inventing drugs against cancer comes pretty close, combining science, teamwork, intuition and passion.

5 - What is your favorite wine region that is not yours or ones you currently work with?
The three major food groups: Mosel, Burgundy, Champagne. And I love the northern Rhone.

6 - What do you think is the biggest problem for winemakers today?
Allocation and pricing for those in the hot areas - how do I get my fair share of the market price without pricing myself out of the market? (e.g. Burgundy), recognition and revenue for those in underappreciated regions (e.g. Beaujolais, Mosel) - with the high production costs, how can I make my domaine financially sustainable? On the production side, my biggest worries are the changing weather patterns and new pests like D. suzuki.
