6 Questions with Max Geitlinger

6 Questions used to be a regular feature that I used to adore reading in the Sunday NY Times Magazine.  Now I want to bring the format to Fass Selections by featuring our favorite wine producers and their candid responses to questions. I love this format as it extends beyond the traditional wine questions and shows am irreverent human side to all the people I work with and work
with us. I hope you enjoy this series and the latest installment is from our new young gun Pinot star from Baden, Max Geitlinger.

1- What was the last great wine you had that was not one of yours?

It was a Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon cuveé from Weingut Umbricht, AOC Aargau, 2015
It was a pleasure and unbelievably smooth, complex and full bodied. Sadly it was only 50cl…

2- What was the last great meal you had?

That was last Sunday and it was amazing. First we had a great 6 course menu at Hirschen Sulzburg, the restaurant of Douce Steiner, it was an unbelievable composition of aroma and taste. Fresh, light, I was feeling satisfied and happy in almost every way when we left.
Step two of the day was pizza made by my best friend and his wife in his own wood stove. Much more easy, but just as delicious. It was a perfect day, sensational food, good wine, great people and brilliant conversation.

3- What are you currently streaming on Netflix/Hulu/Amazon that you really enjoy?

I am working in my own restaurant, the vineyard, the garden, the cellar- there is not much time left for streaming a lot. But I started to watch all James Bond movies lately.  Sometimes really funny, but great music from time to time.

4 - If you were prohibited from making wine, what would be your dream job?

In this case I am in a very luxury position, besides making wine I have my own restaurant at one of the nicest place i could imagine. I love working there, serving food which is growing in our garden, hosting people and give them a great time. So its even a pleasure to work in the garden.

5 - What is your favorite wine region that is not yours or ones you currently work with?

Currently I am very impressed with the  Swiss wine regions, Bündner Herrschaft, Wallis and Tessin, so small structured, but such a high quality level.

6  - What do you think is the biggest problem for winemakers today?

Of course there are the big topics like climate change and global warming, but these are only aftermaths of the big things going wrong on our planet.   Everybody will be affected one day. I think besides red tape this situation will cause a lot of problems for winemakers and everybody else. I can not understand why we as humanity can‘t deal better with this problem.

  1. Are we going to get more Swiss wine from Fass Selections? Or is it too expensive?
