Yes - This Is An Allocated $22.99 Wine from a Region You Have Not Heard of ...Welcome to Fass Selections
Today I have only 60 bottles of this wine and it is $22.99 NET. Before I get into the details of the
wine, region and who made it it is somewhat of a curious story as to why I am selling this wine. I was tasting at Sylvain Gauthier's place in Cheminas. Sylvain, as many of you know makes profound and very classic St. Joseph and St. Epine. After we tasted his out of sight 16s and 17s he said he has some bottles and beer that his brother, Remi Gauthier makes in the Moselle region of France. This is a small region in Northeast France that has almost no acreage under vine and 99% of it gets drunk locally. You never ever see it for export. The AOC is Moselle and they make a total of 1,500
hectoliters of wine annually. Remi Gauthier has .60 ares planted. That is insanely small. The whites are Auxxerois and Muller-Thurgau. There is also Riesling/Gewürztraminer/Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. Reds are Pinot Noir and Gamay. The unique quality of the terroir is that he has clay-limestone soil (Pinot radar going off!!!) and oceanic influences. I have never visited the Moselle but I might now that I work with Remi Gauthier. I tasted the wine and the beer. The beers were nice after days of tasting 17s. But I don't sell beer so that is moot.
The wine that I am selling today to the lucky few of you is the 2017 Remi Gauthier Pinot Noir Moselle AOC for $22.99 NET. I asked for 180 bottles but he only gave me 60. I mean this guy has .60 ares. That is .006 hectares. I won't likely make any money on this. Lose money most likely, but the wine is awesome and so unique, and he will increase production and it's Pinot Noir. The hunt for great value Pinot Noir is a lifelong one that can lead you to interesting places. Now we are in the Moselle. So how is the wine? Initially I thought this was more like a Savigny Les Beaune. It had that cherry cough drop quality but also a cold, cooling herbal element that I didn't really know where to place it hen, but that cooling herbal quality speaks to the mountains and mountain grown Pinot and it is similar to Ziereisen Jost (Switzerland). It's like the Ziereisen & Jost Pinot crossed with a Girard Savigny Les Beaune. It's so unique. It's so distinctive. The aromas are just so good and so off the wall at the same time. Big cherry fruit on the palate with cooling herbals, terrific freshness and purity. It's so fresh and juicy but offers a totally different take on fresh and juicywith that mountain herbal quality. This is very limited. I'll likely have to cut a few people back. This is a great wine and this is also an estate to keep an eye on. What I love about this wine is that I'm the only one crazy enough to bring this in. But the wine is good and that's really all that matters.
