Everyone always says that if they were around when Petrus was $12.99 a bottle they'd mortgage the
house and buy it all if they only knew! It's a favorite trope of wine collectors but in reality hindsight is 20/20 and one does meet the rare collector who bought heavy and hard with certain wines now that are unaffordable to but a few. But that is rare as I said. Right now, and to quote the giant on Twin Peaks "It is happening again," and that is with Martin Müllen and many people on this list. There's a reason I offered a large amount of Martin Müllen wines from 15 and 16. Because everything the man touches turns to gold. The prices are so so cheap and there are people on this list buying large amounts of Martin Müllen which will be the envy of the new generation of up and coming wine collectors and geeks 25-35 years from now. All of these wines will last 20+ years minimum. Martin is making better wine now than ever and his 16's are to swoon over. Just swoon over. I've got two wines today. Under $30 and $25 that are just superstars.
Up first is one of the rarest categories in German wine, that is the Kabinett Feinherb. Oh they are so good when pulled off. And Martin Müllen is one of the masters of this rare designate. A little bit of sugar actually does way more than a lot of sugar. The little extra sugar boost that takes a wine from Kabinett Trocken to Kabinett Feinherb is not much but a world of difference in the taste of the wine. It adds texture. I love it. Young, it goes grat with food with a bit of heat. When it ages, the RS fades into the wine and it becomes stunning. Today I have the 2016 Martin Müllen Trarbacher Hühnerberg Kabinett Feinherb for $22.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. Just absurd pricing for a wine of this quality. What a nose. Just stunning. Apricots and spicy perfume for days. So mineral and so elegant. Peaches and wet rain on slate. Gorgeous. The palate is very deep and very juicy and so so complex already. This was singing when I had it in August 2017. I cannot wait to get these here. This spent a very long time on the yeast (5 weeks) and has an almost tannic quality to it. The nose becomes confectionary after air. Like Mosel cotton candy. Long, juicy, so pure and gloriously spicy. This can be drunk now through 2043. Just a stunner. This got 92 points from Mosel Fine Wines and the review is below. This will be very allocated.
"The 2016er Trarbacher Hühnerberg Kabinett Feinherb was made from fruit harvested at a low 81° Oechsle. It develops a rather reduced nose with elements of oak, herbs and spices. The wine develops a gorgeous mouth-watering spiciness with great acidic structure and finesse right into the remarkable racy finish. This is a beautiful wine with great depth in the making. 2021-2036. 92 MFW"
Up next is another rarity from Martin Müllen and a wine I adore and will also be highly allocated. Müllen heads do not want to miss this. The 2016 Martin Müllen Krover Kirchlay Spatlese Trocken** is a a very very special wine. It can be had for $27.99 a bottle on the 4-pack. That's an absurd price. It's got 93 points from Stephane Reinhardt in the Wine Advocate and that might be underrating it. It's gorgeous. Like OMG gorgeous. Martin served this right before the trio of Hühnerberg Spatlesen so that tells you what he thinks of this divine Trocken in 2016. Super complex nose. Like ridiculously complex. Slate, citrus, cotton candy, tangerine skin and herbs. So nuanced and complex. A super star nose. The palate can be described as intense and opulent at the same time. It's round with superb and thunderously authoritative fruit but it's also so intense and the fruit is totally cooking type fruit. Clean and crisp. Very pure with a super intense character to this wine. Martin says the yeast in 2016 is terrific and Martin would just stick his nose in the glass and just smell. The palate is unreal in its levels of concentration and power. Ripe and chiseled with such depth but razor sharp and playful minerality. Incredible acidity and freshness but emails playful yet serious. I think in 2023 or so this will slay some dragons. A brilliant wine. Below is the WA review.
"The 2016 Riesling Kröver Kirchlay Spätlese ** has a clear and intense apricot aroma intermixed with flinty notes. Round and lush on the palate, with fine tannins and stony flavors, this is a juicy-piquant and elegant Riesling with a stimulating finish. This is still young but promising and with fleshy texture on its crystalline bones. " 93, WA, Reinhardt
