As many of you know, I have a major movie buff. One of the main things that makes movie buffs is that we tend to be familiar with a wide range of movies. Specifically, we love movies by some famous directors that are as good or better than the movies that made them famous. The movie I quote above, THX 1138, was made by George Lucas before Star Wars and is about a future dystopian where the populace is suppressed by androids and mandatory drug use. Oh and Francis Coppola Ford produced by Robert Duvall in the title role. It's brilliantly made, and is rising today, almost 50 years later.

As a wine lover, one of the things that I do look for the great performers in regions or countries that are less appreciated (and less money).  Today's offer represents two of these appellations.

The 2016 Vintage
Before I get into today's offer I have a small rant. Yes, some of you may say that most of these emails are rantings anyway, but please indulge me. 2016 is the most vintage transparent terroir since 2010. It's the best vintage since 2010. It's an amazing vintage and I can not stop thinking about 2010 when I taste these wines. They are like if 1993 (the good 93's) and 2010 had a child. But it's better than it was 1993, but it was better than it was 1993. 93 eye popping low yield numbers. I'll go out on limp and say 2016/2010 are my vintage Burgundy killer neck. The 2016's have Crunch and transparency for days. The fruit is amazing. Every single bottle. Not like 2015 where it's a bit vulgar sometimes but like 2010 where the fruit has the clarity and focus of the terroir expression as well. It's like the fruit, despite being dense in some wines is terrifically pure and transparent. It's a vintage that, like 2010, I'm going to regret not having bought many. Mine are gone. I'm tucking away so many 16s.

At Fass Selections I take an enormous pride in my Burgundy portfolio. I've discovered many terrific producers who have left me to greener pastures. That's the name of the game I've learned.

Below is a list of those who have been around the world (and much more expensive) since we opened

- Jean-Marc Bouley
- Julien Cruchandeau
- Florent Garaudet
- Domaine Duroche
- Jerome Galeyrand
- Chavy-Chouet
- Billiard-Gonnet
- Hervé Murat

Laurent Boussey is in the same league and he already has terrific terroir.  So when do you know, what do you know? He is also fully realizing his potential in 2016 and the vintage 2017. He says he is truly happy when he reaches his true potential. I think 2016 is really humble and shy and said 2017. Really splitting hairs as he made incredible 16s. We will be delivering some this Fall and have already delivered his brilliant white 16's.

These are old school, classic and traditional chiseled incredible fruit (especially in 2016) and Laurent has some very serious terroir as his father has retired and he has had vineyards in 24 different appellations.

Up for the first time, which is the 2016 Laurent Boussey Pommard for $39.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. I use Pommard as a THX1138 as Volnay really gets all the love. People like Pommard, do not get me wrong, Volnay makes people swoon. Pommard and I think it's better than that. I'm a Pommard Guy. I like the density and intensity of a great Pommard but they can be as graceful as Volnay. As soon as I tried this wine, I loved it and talked Laurent's ear off. People who have called me during the day. This wine is insanely good.

The nose is so very Pommard. Earthy, stoney, floral and intense cherry fruit.  Like a fresh bowl of
only the best darker cherries out of the bunches you see at the farmer's market. It's vivid like technicolor. There is also an animal element that is awesome. There is a serious sense of density in the nose. Stoney as well as black cherries emerging from the air as soon as possible. Licorice as well. It's so Pommard and very complex.

The fruit on the palate is intense, urgent and sweet. It's got some amazing density and I just love the boldness of a Pommard. One sip I took it all I could say was wow. It takes over your mouth. Inner mouth aromas are unreal. Dense and complex with beautifully mixed black and red fruit with wonderful velvety tannins that are prominent. Terrific depth and swath to the tannins. Awesome length, acidity and freshness. Will be better in 5 years but great today. It is so mouth-filling and complex. There is so much going on. I swish for minutes and keep finding something new. Was easy to swish because of the impeccable balance. The freshness is top notch and balances the ridiculous levels of fruit. Just awesome. This is as brilliant village Pommard as I've ever had. The finish pumps out fruit on a lovely stone / earth platter. It lasts minutes. This is the rare Pommard that can possibly be drunk on release but will age for 20 years. Pommard and Volnay seems to be sweet spots in 2016 from what I tasted back in March.

Up next I've got the 2016 Laurent Boussey Monthelie 1er Cru"Sur la Velle" for $34.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. This is the first time I discovered on my recent trip and fell in love with instantly. This is from 30-50 year old vines and is located next to Volnay and the great 1st Cru "The Fulliot Fields." The most famous owner of this estate is Domaine Leflaive. Yes, that Leflaive. The good one. A 1st vintage that is a sleeper but really rocks. Monthelie can be too rustic but in the hands of Laurent Boussey, it has the right amount of refinement.

The nose is just sick. Herbal, dusty, earthy, potpourri, red ripe cherries, some strawberries, mushrooms, and some coffee notes.  Big cherries.  Lovely Licorice and such bright dazzling cherry fruit. Mid season cherries and perfectly ripe. Raspberry as well. So alluring and accurate.  Just stunningly complex aromas. There's also a wooly and tweedy element that just rules. It's so Burgundy. BIG wine and super, super juicy and just exquisitely defined fruit and a sense of refinement one does not get in Monthelie that often. This amazingly ripe and pronounced tannin has a sense of refinement yet again. Super complex mid palate with superb concentration and tiny cherry explosiveness and sap. There is a broad array of intense flavors and sap for days on the epic finish. Amazing freshness and purity. The sense of small berry intensity is just amazing. The length just does not quit. I love this wine. This is an example of a wine to buy the carload in 16 as it provides just superb value.
