I've been very exited to write this email.

This wine is allocated by the winery.  There are only 300 bottles made.

This is easily one of the greatest wines I've tasted this year. It is from one of the top winemakers in Italy.  Today I am offering the 2017 Cesare Bussolo Barolo "Fossati" for $154.99 each on a 3-pack. This is one of the best vineyards in La Morra and the Roberto Voerzio version is easily the best. Or is it? The 2017 from Cesare is so so so so good. Awe inspiring as 2017 Barolo gets.  The same wine from the same vineyard made by the same winemaker in the same vintage is available now for $370. This is $155.

The nose is highly perfumed and complex with layers and layers of beautiful fruits. It is an absolute knock out and one of the best young Barolos I have had for a long time. Sick. Super sick. Magic. The creme de la creme. This is a superstar wine. It's so nice when elite expensive wine delivers. The style here is classically styled but a hint of polish with such subtleties. More Robert Bressan than Jacques Tati. Nose has the most precise mid season cherries ever. So wow. Tar. Spice. Smoke. Layered like nothing else. Elite. A nose that captures you . Licorice. So clean. Every aroma is so defined. So precise. But it also is ephemeral and flirty like great Nebbiolo should be. Seductive. Every sniff a new nuance. It smells crunchy. Ocean air leads to superb minerality. So so good. The clarity here is ridiculous. Just so insane. 9.8 nose. It might go higher.

Day 2 my score went from a 9.7 to 9.8. Nose is so floral. Cherry, so cooling. Really lovely. Tar, roses, mineral. Insanely floral. Wow. Stunningly complex. Mineral up the wazoo. Perfumed and intense. Complex. Insanely fresh. Juicy and so perfumed.

On the palate, so elegant and concentrated with just the most precise fruit. Chambolle 1er Cru like. Salty sweet almost. God damn this is so good. How to you get salty sweet cherries in a wine? And to have it taste this good. These are crunchy cherries as well. And like salt that you blend with caramel. That glistening salt. The clear stuff. Balanced. So, so balanced and filled with energy and the most clear and precise fruit. Amazing tannins. The tannins are so sweet and refined but they do not come across as sweet due to the pointed and poignant minerality. Insanely perfumed fruits, but with power and length that illustrates what a fantastic wine this is. It's genius. So long. Powerful but so deep and cuts a swath. Long like a July day. It never ends. And it coats your palate with minerals but the fruit keeps pushing for minutes. My score will be higher in 5-8 years.

Work. Terrific structure. So complete. Such a long finish and so nimble. So clean. So pure. Amazingly precise and smells super elegant. Unreal sweet fruit. So pure. So complex. So powdery. Balance is superb. This is as good as Barolo gets. Cesare says his wines will last 6-7 days open. This only lasted 2 days and I drank every sip. This is a 20+ year wine.

This is going to be one of those wines that people fight over.  There is so little of it and it's so outrageously good.  We've sold a few wines like this (Fauterie Cuvee H, Juge, Brisset Echezeax).  If you want it, this is your chance to secure an allocation going forward.

The Cesare Bussolo Story
I have no idea how on earth I got this producer.

He's one of the top 2-3 young producers in the Langhe and is the winemaker at a Top 10/20 estate.

So here's the story. I was checking some of my favorite wine groups on the Internet and I saw Cesare Bussolo's name repeatedly pop up. I was immediately curious.

The more I read about him and his winemaking prowess the more I was impressed.
 - He worked at Brovia for 7 years, which is a very good, very solid traditional estate. A great place to learn one's craft.
 - Then he went to the great Roberto Voerzio estate in 2007.

Voerzio: from Hyper Modern to NeoClassical
Back then at Voerzio, before Cesare got there as the winemaker, it was not really the style of anyone on this list. These were, big, muscular, lavishly oaked Barolos.

Cesare came in and there was a huge style change. Away from the oaky style and more into a terroir-driven, mineral style with great freshness. The new style was based on a more traditional elevage in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks, rather than the 100% new barriques which Roberto Voerzio had utilized in the previous decade. These wines go for $250-$300 dollars a bottle for the Barolo and the Barbera, only made in magnums, goes for $350+. They are amongst the best wines in Barolo now with Cesare Bussolo at the helm.  The top Crus go for $250-$400.

The Estate
Knowing what he did at Voerzio and knowing what wines he made (only a Barbera and a Barolo)  I wrote him an email telling him that we are the perfect people to sell his wine and that I know his wines are going to be amazing and can you please send me a bottle of each. It was a really good email and he did just that. They got here. They rested. Cesare then followed me on Instagram and started seeing what I was all about during the period the wines were resting. And then the day came.
