Try going to a wine store and finding a great 1er Cru Burgundy under $50 and under $40. You cannot."Jean-Jacques Girard, who is slowly bowing out of day-to-day operations of this 17 ha domaine in favor of his son Vincent, enthusiastically described 2019 as "along with 2018, the best that I have ever seen, and it's genuinely remarkable to have had two great vintages back to back. " Burghound
The 2021 Vintage - Down 50-100%
The other headline is Agnes Girard told me they could lose 50-100% of their 2021s. This is devastating. I feel so bad for them as they could not be nicer people and they work so hard. Jean-Jacques is a gentleman's gentlemen and I am very upset for them. Let's show the Girards some love today.
JJ Girard
Girard has made a highly successful career out of making wines in the $30-$50 range (my direct from the
winery pricing). These wines are among the best values in France.
We sell more inexpensive Burgundy from Girard than anyone else, for good reason.
- They punch way way above their weight
- they are transparent
- they have wonderful, deep, fleshy ebullient fruit
- they are accessible to wine geeks and normal people alike
- you don't have to wait for many bottlings and the ones you do, it's only 4-6 years and totally worth the wait.
I love Girard.
The Wines
Up first I have the archetypal 2019 Jean-Jacques Girard Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru "Lavieres" for $44.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. The name Lavieres comes from the word Laves which are the flat rocks found in the soil. It's located less than a mile from the hill of Corton and abuts Aux Fourneaux and Aux Gravains, two terrific 1er Crus. It also abuts Girard's great Pernand 1er Cru "Aux Vergelesses."
One of the finest sites in all of SLB.
What a nose. Just dizzying. 2019 is so good in the so called "B" villages. Nose is deep. It's floral. Dark red roses and violets. Late season cherry fruit and also black cherries. Almost kirsch in it's intensity Perfectly ripened mid-season cherries and loads of just perfect undergrowth. Also hints of very fine tweed jacket. A lipstick-like intensity. Like a new Brioni. Gorgeous violets and other complex floral notes. Hints of citrus. This is just singing. Really stunning. It's so clean and airy and just super Savigny. So pure and so dare I say it, Delectable.
What a palate. A monster. Nuanced, clear and detailed. So deep, so fresh, so concentrated. Amazing purity and sappy red and black cherries. Powerful and also elegant. Sappy. Such nice acid and freshness has an electricity to it despite its ripeness. Wow. Exhilarating is the best word. Terrific inner mouth aromas and sweet, ripe velvety and substantial tannins. The mineral drive throughout this wine is amazing right now but some of that will meld into fruit as this ages. This needs 5 years and then oh boy.
Everybody in around 10 years are going to VERY happy with all the 2019's from Girard they are putting in their cellars. These age into majestic beautiful finesse-driven wines that can only come from one place. Burgundy.
Below is Burghound's 92 Point Review.
"A discreet touch of wood frames very pretty aromas of poached plum, violet and a broad array of spice elements that include anise and cinnamon. The sleek, vibrant and beautifully well detailed medium-bodied flavors possess excellent depth and length. Note that this fine effort is sufficiently structured to reward a decade plus of cellaring." 92 Points, Burghound
I love this wine. It is the 2019 Jean Jacques Girard Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru "Les Vergelesses" for as little as $36.99 on a 4-pack. Let me get straight to the point. The wine is unbelievable and is one of the best expressions of Pernand one can get and frankly one of the best Pinot Noir values from 2019 anywhere. It's like a baby Corton. Especially in 2019, with its wonderful purity, freaking ridiculous fruit, depth, aromatic complexity and freshness. I adore this wine. JJ Girard raised his prices and I didn't and squeezed my margins more to keep it under $37. Girard is an experienced wine maker. And I've always loved his wines but something happened and in 2019, the wines went from great to miraculous. In perfectly ripe vintages the outer off the beaten path appellations always provide insane value. Stunning, stunning deep pinot fruit with perfect balance. It's so loaded with fruit it's silly how fun and deep and yet serious this is all at the same time. The nose has darker than normal cherries, and more lift and waft than the 2018 which was the last vintage made.
What a nose. Wide open. Big cherry. Mint, menthol, some black cherry inflections and even cherry flower. Wow. Moss. Soil tones. Very very high toned nose. Impressive. Jumps out of glass at you. Red apple as well. Just awesome. Gorgeous nose. After air it has bright mid season cherries, sous bois, tea, sour cherries, cranberry and such purity, minerality and depth. Such a soaring nose.
Palate is ridiculous with almost painfully intense juicy red cherries, framed by spices and so much freshness. Great freshness actually. There is huge volume and an amazing dark red/black fruit crunch. It's so ripe yet so succulent. Palate is ripe and rich with lovely finesse and huge cherry overload. Lovely freshness and purity with a nice helping of diet. Lovely texture and tang with terrific, finesse, energy and balance. Love this. Lithe and very fine tannins with lovely earthy sweetness. What a mouthfeel. Love the hint of bitter, succulent sour cherry on the finish. It's insanely good. I've never had a warm vintage here and man it really works well at Girard. The finish is long and clinging with beautiful ripe and juicy tannins and epic sap. Just an epic bottle. It will and can age for 15+ years but man this will KILL young. The 2019 vintage of this great wine is one of the best value plays in all of my Burgundy book that I've worked with.
Below is the 92 Point Burghound score.
"This too is admirably pure with its combination of black cherry, extract of plum and lovely violet nuances. There is again fine volume to the delicious, plump and relatively sleek flavors that possess both solid punch and power before terminating in a sneaky long and decidedly firm finish. This is actually a refined version of Aux Vergelesses as there is almost no rusticity." 92 Points, Burghound
