It feels like forever since we’ve done a Marbleous offer and it has been. Between the pandemic and
getting me samples it’s been over a year. Maybe longer. But good things come to those who wait and today I’ve got not only the best wine Tobias Feiden has ever made but also the best Spätburgunder I’ve ever had from that Mosel. It’s also not close as this wine blew my kind and showed the potential for the Mosel and specifically the Lower Mosel for world class Pinot Noir.

Tobias always had a careful hand in the cellar and the vineyard and I always expected greatness from him but the 2018 Marbleous (Tobias Feiden) Moselsurcher F Spätburgunder for $49.99 on a 3-pack is a masterpiece. He’s saved the last 60 bottles for me. He’s guarded them in a corner of the cellar as these are long since sold out in Germany. This is his debut single vineyard Pinot Noir. This is the Nas Illmatic level of German single vineyard Spätburgunder debuts. Nas, who is a very famous rapper had done one verse on a Main Source single and his debut LP was eagerly awaited. It remains to this day in my humble opinion the greatest debut hip hop album of all time. Each song shreds and Nas’ lyrical mastery was there for the world to see.

This wine is the vinous version of Illmatic.

Super herbal nose with gorgeous sweet cherry fruit. Ethereal and complex. Huge spice. Just huge. Smells like 1er Cru red Burgundy. Blown away. Woodsy, incense and infinite complexity. Slatey as well. This is a knockout nose. Just gorgeous. Keeps opening and opening and getting more expansive and aromatic.

Palate is so sweet, yet earthy and supple. Wowsers. Beautiful wine that is exceptionally pure and deep. Silky and ethereal. Palate is explosive and has unreal cherry fruit that is so precise and so delicate. This is rocking red Riesling. Nimble like nothing else. So gentle and serene. Unreal purity. Dissipates like nothing else. Balance and purity are off the charts. Sappy and lovely fruit skin type fruits. So supple. This is the greatest Mosel Pinot I’ve ever had.

For ideal primetime drinking wait 5 years.

Day 2 though! What a nose. Old wood, insane spice with gorgeous cherry and mulberry fruits. This is super complex and deep. Still seems like it has more to give. Spiced mulberry cake. So subtle, yet strong and nuanced. Sickness. The spice is next level here. So is the sweet wood spice. This is genius. Palate is super juicy, tangy and concentrated. Super pure and wonderful, ripe and cutting tannins. Long finish, structure to burn and this has a decade ahead of it. Needs 5 years I think. Even a bit closed on the finish. So impressive.
