The Incredible thing about Burgundy is how the wines are so different across the different villages and winemakers. As I think about our own 1er Cru producers in Pommard and Volnay, I love them all but they are completely different.
Brisset's wines are the most utterly precise. The palate is almost like you are drinking a liquefied work of art.They are almost other worldy in their perfection. The precision of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa.
Rebourgeon's wines are at the other end. Crazily delicious, juicy mostly blackberry fruit. Yes, they are brilliantly well made and balanced with lovely aromatics, but the headline is the fruit, which is miraculous.
Pierrick Bouley's wines are so structured and muscular and take several years to unfold. Old school, in the most beautiful way. But when they unfurl, watch out - these are some of the best red wines in the Côte de Beaune.
Francois Buffet's wines are somewhat in the middle. You get that stunningly juicy fruit (cherry) that is so good you have to hold yourself back from drinking it all. One simply does not guzzle 1er cru Burgundy. But you also get that brightness. Gorgeous, almost, sexy aromatics. Pure, clean fruit with lovely florals and spice. More Michaelangelo to Brisset's Da Vinci. There is a little bit of that sexy, sensual Sistine Chapel in these wines.
I had a range of Buffet's 17s and Buffet's collection of 17s was possibly the best collection to drink young that I've had in my career. And the 19s crush them.
The 2019 Vintage in Pommard
The sun really shined on Pommard in 2019 and it’s the best Pommard vintage I’ve tasted since 2010 and before that 1999. The wines are packed with exquisite dense fruit and reek of the wonderful stoney terroir that makes Pommard to special. Cote de Beaune’s answer to Gevrey Chambertin. I’ve offered the great Pommard Rugiens from Buffet which many of you got and sadly some of you did miss out on as great Pommard doesn’t grow on trees but it grows on vines that sadly sometimes that have low yields and are affected by vine disease and all sorts of other factors. But I’ve got a good amount today of one of the final 19 1er Crus I’ll offer from Buffet.
I’m so happy that so many of you have embraced the brilliance of these wines and I can report back that the estate and Marc-Olivier Buffet are thrilled that all of you are so enthusiastic about the wines. My advice is to drink the 17s with aplomb and bury the 18’s but the 18s will eclipse the 17s in a decade I think as they have the materials but are super closed now. I think all the 19s are approachable now but there is a 40% they will close down in the next year. But they have all drunk so well during my tastings.
The Wine
Today I’ve only got 48 bottles of the 2019 Francois Buffet Pommard 1er Cru “Clos Micot” for $59.99 NET and it’s a stunning wine. It’s located on the bottom of the hill next to a ton of premier crus and anything at the bottom of the hill in Pommard means a lighter more accessible wine and boy is this wine friendly. But Clos Micot is still Pommard and has guts, body, structure and intensity.
What a nose. Buffett + Pommard + 2019 = 😁 Stunning aromas of pulverized stones. Mid season red cherry fruit. Unreal minerality. Terrific clarity and vividness. Nose also has tree bark, wet earth and smoke.
Palate is so elegant, ethereal yet substantial and complex. Decadent yet precise with terrific purity and sweetness. So fresh and so balanced. The balance on 19 Buffet’s is wonderful. Cherry compote as well. Sweet, sweet fruit and so slippery, sweet and silky. Good tannins that are perfectly ripe ensure a long life. Just outrageous. Really long finish. Such a nice balance between sweetness, earthiness and freshness. With a few hours of air this has picked up elegance and compactness. Great wine! Drink now through 2039.
