2017 Lafon - $179-$249

Buffet's wines, which are up with the top guys in terms of quality, are being offered today for 50% below giant negociant wines.
They are around 75% less money than the top wines in Volnay. Which I believe are their peers.
In a world where it's almost impossible to buy even decent top terroir 1er crus for under $100, these are under $60.
Up first is the 2017 Francois Buffet Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chenes" for $57.99 a bottle on a 4-pack and $56.99 on Case Pricing. I'm, offering case pricing at
This wine is made from mostly 80 year old vines and also a small section of 12 year old vines.
The nose is insane. Just superbly complex with classic Clos des Chenes aromas that leap out of the glass. Huge cherry. Mid season cherry, cherry flower, and like 2% sour cherries. As it opens, raspberry and even some briary and damson aromas. Just amazing. Huge florals as well. Blackberry flowers, iris, a wisp of lilacs and even fig! Yes, fig! It's there. Just an intense perfume but also this earthy, mulchy element that I just love. It smells like it is from revered land. Elite terroir. Blackberry, spices and licorice also come through. This is so layered and complex. I mean this is old vine Clos des Chenes after all.
The palate is like a miracle. You can taste and feel the density yet remarkably, it still remains light on its feet as that is the genius of Francois Buffet. It's so so complex and utterly profoundly juicy with just startling purity. Big, big cherry and boysenberry fruit. So pure and crunchy. Sleek as well. Simply terrific concentration and wonderful tiny berry fruit with velvety and super refined tannins. My goodness this is just silk but it also has density and structure. It's so unique.
The finish lasts miles and exudes grace, class and elegance. It's at once harmonious but also grippy with those silky fine tannins.
For $70, this is insane. I've never ever had such a great terroir be so accessible at this young age. You can drink this young and enjoy it but it will easily last 20+ years.
Up next is a wine I wanted to sell in 2019 but it was sold out by the time I got around to it but I did remember my 17 note was excellent and Buffet had some so today I’m happy to offer the 2017 Francois Buffet Volnay 1er Cru La Carelles Sous Chapelle for $57.99 a bottle on a 4-pack and $56.99 on case pricing. This price is just a filthy value. This is always an elegant and very lithe Volnay but in the hands of Buffet it is liquid silk. It’s all fruit and lace.
The nose is gorgeous. Cherry flower, sour cherries on the very floral and very pretty nose. Such a Volnay nose. Classic nose. This nose slays. Gorgeous mid to late season cherries. Unreal minerals. Sappy, so clean and so pure.
Palate is just stunning. Wow. Incredibly concentrated and so pure with a black cherry, late season red cherry fruit soak that is unreal. Clean, mineral and so, so juicy. Balanced and so elegant with ripe and elegant tannins. Super high quality tannins and great freshness. Long, lingering black cherry on the finish. Hit of opulence just stays in your mouth. Wow what a palate. So precise and focused. Acid etched with a laser. Sumptuous yet so refined with just awesome cherry concentrated fruit and such fine tannins. Sweet but also excessively mineral and that finish. Wow, what a finish. Unreal purity and length. Blown away. Just terrific fruit. It’s dense and elegant with just crazy energy and delineation. This is wow wine. Drink now through 2040.
The Winery: Francois Buffet
The first thing to know about Francois Buffet is they have ELEVEN 1er Crus, yes count them, eleven 1er Crus. I remember first reading about the estate and was so excited to see that. And the terroir they have is no joke. Some of the best sites in Volnay and Pommard. Many I was familiar with but, 3-4 I was not, and really were revelations to me. We all have our favorites but sometimes we don't know we have a favorite yet because we have not tasted it.
The second thing you need to know about Francois Buffet is the delicate style on display here. The color is translucent like Jacky Truchot or Enderle & Moll. The color ofthese wines is remarkable. The gentle delicate style here is right up my alley and I think many of yours. These are hauntingly elegant Burgundies in the best sense possible with exquisite grace and delicacy. The gentle hand of Marc-Olivier Buffet, who has taken over for his parents, who still help out. I love these wines and I know you will as well. The greatest thing about them in regards to the portfolio is they provide a complete contrast to Pierrick Bouley' more structured and muscular style. These are heavenly, dictionary perfect Volnays.
