My Game Is Up
So as you all know, these wines are released to the public in March and we used to sell them in February and get more than our fair share. Alas, the Swiss and Germans seem to have figured this out and they are now allocated and I need to sell them now. So - we are in Enderle and Moll, Mobitz, Brisset territory. We all knew the day was coming and it's finally and sadly here.
The Wine
Today I've got two stunning wines from the brilliant 2018 and 2016 vintages, the Jaspis Spätburgunder Alte Reben and the Jaspis Pinot Noir.
The Wine
The 2019 Ziereisen Pinot Noir Jaspis "Zipsin" can be had for $52.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. It is one of the greatest young Jaspis I've ever tasted. It's not a contest. This wine is just awesome. From mostly limestone-dominated soils, the color is darker than anything you've ever seen from Ziereisen but it's still more elegant than a lot of Pinot Noir out there.
The nose is staggering and heady. Hanspeter's wines have an aromatic sorcery to them. There is a whiff of citrus that is just unreal. Super amounts of spice and earthy wet leaves. It's just waves and waves and waves of the purest, freshest, deepest pure cherry Pinot fruit you can imagine. The 19s could not be more different from the 18s. The 18s are more dark but also a skoche less ripe than the very giving, very dense and very generous 19’s. They are kind of like 2019 in Burgundy. An essence of Pinot Noir if you will with super user friendliness. This wine really mimics Gevrey 1er or Grand Cru. These wines just strut.
The palate is deep and tannic with incredible complexity and just unfathomable power. This is super structured yet also so bright and dense. The elegance and nimble quality of this wine combined with its large scale just leaves one shaking their head. There is huge fruit that is sweet and dense as the ripeness is just gorgeous. The earthy sweetness is outrageous. Big grip and tannins combined with terrific acids and length that does not quit are the standouts. This wine takes over ones mouth with incredible bright cherry fruit that had a very clearly defined beginning, middle and end.
The finish is crazy persistent. While being very structured the length and intensity suggest that once this is cellared for 3-5 years this will be as epic as a Norwegian folk tale. All the Ziereisen Pinot Noir I've had before has been super accessible from its youth and while 2018 is as well. I do believe once they come out of their shells (5-6 years) this will be Hanspeter's finest vintage. He was as excited as I've ever seen him. This is only 12.5% alcohol. That is amazing for a wine of this much substance. This is super limited and such a screaming value. Don't miss this. The 2017 got 94+ Points from Stephan Rheinhardt.
"The 2018 Jaspis Pinot Noir "Zipsin" is a fascinating Pinot with a dark ruby color and an intense yet spicy and even coolish bouquet, with smoked and tart dark cherry and berry aromas intermixed with notes of cedar wood, tobacco and pure cacao. Full-bodied, intense and concentrated on the fleshy, dense and powerful yet also pure, fresh and refined palate with ripe, elegant tannins and great balance, this is a long, intense and spicy Pinot of great class and style. The wine was aged in new and old 225-liter barrels for 22 months and bottled with less than one gram of residual sugar and 13.5% alcohol. Tasted from lot L 30 20 in November 2020.." - 94+ Points Stephan Rheinhardt (2018 vintage)
