Chambolle on the Sesia
I drink a lot of young Boca. And I can always sort of imagine what it will taste like after 10 plus
years.
- It has the structure.
- It has that lithe fruit.
- It obviously has Nebbiolo secondary and tertiary flavors.
But when you taste one perfectly aged, it can blow your mind. And my mind was blown by a recent bottle. It has that refined elegance you normally only get in places like Chambolle.
I immediately E-Mailed Anna Sertorio and asked if she had any left. Fortunately she had a small allocation.
Oh and the Sesia is the closest river.
The Wine
I am thrilled to offer the Podere Ai Vailloni Boca "Vigna Cristiana" 2010 (straight from the cellar) for $51.99 a bottle on a 4-pack.
To be honest, I was so enraptured by the wine that my tasting note is a bit thin.
The nose is of course what you pay for with old Nebbiolo. It's simply classic, but the age just makes it so much more refined. You get that clasic Nebbiolo spice. And then the perfect fresh cherry. No way this should smell like that after 11 years but that's what great winemaking with great terroir will get you. So, so floral. As it opens, you get plush roses. Like you are wandering in a rose garden and stuffing your nose into the open flowers. The cherry becomes even more perfect. It absolutely saturates the nose almost as if you have an electric air freshener pumping inside of it.
The palate is the image of perfection. Perfect cherry. Perfect acidic balance. Elite level Burgundian freshness. There is that weightlessness about the wine. It just exists on the palate, almost without being there. You get that these days with great, great Burgundy and maybe some wines from Alto. Ar.Pe.Pe. And maybe a few old school Barolo and Barbaresco producers. It's just too hot to make many wines like this in the Langhe any more. That doesn't mean that there aren't great wines in the Langhe - just that they don't taste like this.
The finish is long and insane.
This is $100+ in Barolo if you can get something this elegant. You might have to really gun for the crazy expensive Baroli to get something like this today.
Wow.
I obviously don't have a ton but ask for what you'd like and I'll do my best to be fair.
Below is Antonio's review from before with wine truly blossomed. No offense to Antonio who I respect tremendously but in my opinoin, this wine improved a lot since his review.
"The 2010 Boca Vigna Cristiana shows all of the complexity and subtlety of a wine that spent three years in cask. The aromatics alone are beguiling. An exotic mix of sweet pipe tobacco, mint, dried flowers, spice and cedar lifts effortlessly from the glass. Medium in body, with striking energy and verve, the 2010 is a fabulous example of the appellation, with tons of pungent, savory character to match its quirky personality. Drink it over the next 7-10 years. The blend is 70% Nebbiolo, 20% Vespolina and 10% Uva Rara."- 94 Points, VINOUS, Antonio Galloni (2010)
