Been tasting a bit of wine recently. Lots of '05 Burgs but these were all from the vast denizens of my wine cellar.
The '05 Schloss Johannisberg Spatlese (Grunlack) has started to close down. It still has beautiful slatey, fresh red fruits and a haunting elegance but never really got around to where it was this summer even after two days open. This is a great wine and one of the Rheingau Spatlesen of the vintage but bury it as the big sleep has started on this wine.
The '05 Christoffel Erdener Treppchen Auslese** was unreal. The Auslesen from the Mittle Mosel really are not as sappy sweet as they were this summer. They have shown great lift from their acidities which has projected the fruit and minerality while crisping them out. The botrytis comes through on the nose but man this wine is packed on a delicate yet firmly structured frame. Long finish and outrageous midpalate. The fruit is less exotic and honeyed than the '01 but I think that is due to the clean botrytis. The more I taste the more I realize Auslese is really where it is at in '05. I need to buy more Auslese.
The '00 Vieux Donjon was mediocre and had a weird burnt quality to it. Low acid and plummy roasted flavors. Could be off or my dislike of CDP is beginning to make me bias in ant-Grenache way? Who knows.
The '99 Bruno Clair Savigny-Les-Beaune "La Dominode" is fantastic wine. From some of the oldest vines in Savigny this wine is profound and is easily the best Savigny I have had. I would LOVE to taste the '05 of this because due to the character of the vintage I think it would be better than the '99. Dark aromas of pine, resin, black cherries and forest floor. Brooding nose. The palate was incredibly concentrated and had loads of black/blue fruits and foresty, mineral flavors. The purity of the fruit was quite striking. The finish was long and the wine was still tannic but not undrinkable. This has 10-15 years on it.
