One more wine from last night - 2004 Gangloff Cote Rotie "La Barbarine"

With reported yields over 85hl/ha it is astounding that Gangloff made a wine of this much power and concentration. Has a great nose of cooling blue fruit, olives and some toasty oak. Great concentration and ripeness along with a lightness. Lacey almost after it was given proper aeration. The nose developed some great floral elements too. A joy to drink and really gained in weight and complexity as the night went along. The tannins were ripe, grainy and sweet. I don't have much experience with Gangloff and understand there is some relationship with Rene Rostaing. I would love to have some more especially with some age on them.

  1. I haven't had one in quite a few vintages, but in the mid '90s, he was pretty spoof.

  2. This was no Jamet or Gallet and had some oak initially (one person thought too much initially) but really turned the corner as the night went on and it integrated very well.

  3. In those days (maybe '95?) he was a mite heavy on the extraction as well. Glad to hear they've settled down.

  4. IMHO, still spoof. Even from your notes, I see nothing that says "Cote Rotie"..no violets, meat, smoke, blood, all that N. Rhone goodness.

I see you commenting on a good Syrah, not a good Cote Rotie.

  5. I thought this was pretty weak. My first 2004 N. Rhone tasted and I will try more. The oak was certainly evident, but as long as there is sufficient material that's not a problem. To me, it seemed hollow and short. It did get better with air, but there was nothing present -- from a purely structural standpoint -- to make be believe that it would be a good wine.

  6. I thought it filled out nicely as the evening went on. It was hollow to start out I will give you that. I thought the oak integrated well and the last sip was the best. I thought it had structure but was hidden but it was there as the length was excellent.
