The drive to the Pfeffingen from Schafer-Frohlich was relaxing and the difference in landscape was striking. Much flatter lands and the soils turned red and as a result the wines tend to be a bit more opulent and flashy. This was an excellent collection of '05's from Pfeffingen with some very high highs.
'05 Riesling Trocken - From loamy soil. Nose of stone, orange blossoms, orange flesh and some white pepper. Maybe even a hint of orange oil. Very viscous on the palate with nice crisp focused flavors and a touch of richness on the fiinish. Excellent everyday Riesling.
'05 Rudi Wiest Fusion - This is a blend of Schuerebe and Riesling. Some nice grapefruit and ornage blossoms on the nose. Elegant and very ripe with good density and ripeness. Nice finish. Riesling with a twist.
'05 Pfeffo (Kabinett Halbtrocken) - Orange peel, lemon on this somewhat candied confectionary nose. Palate exudes ripeness and there is a powdery impression left from the acidity and "tannin." Skeletal wine. Lovely dry Riesling.
'05 Weilberg GG - Maybe the best value in GG's in 2005 - Brilliant nose that soars from the glass with intense minerality, orange blossom, white pepper and some lilacs. Palate is complex and rich with great acidic cut yet still very opulent. Very structured wine that will age for a long time. One of the most serious dry wines I have ever had from Pfeffingen. Just outrageous.
'05 Ungsteiner Herrenberg Spatlese - Minerals, orange blossoms and citrus oil on the nose. Chalky, tactile and sappy on the palate with nice long flavors. Lovely but not overly complex at this point.
'04 Gewurztraminer Spatlese - Nose of peach, orange blossom, lychee, sage and roses. Incredibly opulent and floral nose but manages wonderful restraint on the palate. Lovely soft texture and snappy acidity. A nice twist on Gewurztraminer and always one of my favorites in Germany.
'05 Gewurztraminer Spatlese - Nose was like above but ripe and a touch more depth. Peaches and cream. Lavender. Orange blossom. Great nose and incredibly silky texture. Wonderful and the best Gewurztraminer I have tasted yet from Pfeffingen. Just lovely and class in a glass.
'05 Schuerebe Spatlese - Nose of root beer, sage, pineapple, green gerbs and even some jalapeno. Very complex palate. Ripe with beautiful purity and richness. Powdery finish with great acids. Long and juicy. Classic.
'05 Ungsteiner Nussriegel Rieslaner Auslese - Great wine and the only Rieslaner tasted the whole time....and what a Rieslaner it was. Huge nose of lime tang, even some mild saffeon, citrus and minerels. Palate was just outrageous with a huge, fat midpalate, electric acidity and wonderful long finish that never really leaves your palate.
'05 Ungsteiner Herrenberg Schuerebe Auslese - Always my favorite Schuerebe year in and year out. Does not dissapoint ever. Always such a dramatic wine. Gamey nose of foie gras, grapefrut and just intense ripe citrus fruits. So ripe. Palate has waves of kinky, nervous Schuerebe fruit. Very honeyed palate but had great balancing acidity.
'05 Ungsteiner Herrenberg Schuerebe Berenauslese - Intense aromas wrought with clean pure botrytis. This wine just smells like the prolouge to an epic. Kinky, exotic nose. Just crazy yet playful at the same time. Palate has just waves and waves of ripe, concentrated honeydew melon drenched in botrytis. Sugary but the finish leaves you with the knowldege of a hidden structure wating to come out. Just a babyfat monster now but in 15 to 20 years this will be something to behold.
'05 Ungsteiner Herrenberg Schuerebe Trockeneberenauslese - Not much to say about this wine except wow! Almost a solid in the mouth with huge flavors of botrytis, intensely concentrated grapefruit and some herbs and sage. Saffron runs throughout. An astounding wine that will live forever. A monument. Also in the world of TBA this wine is a value!
