The delicacy of Auslese: 2005 F. Weins Prum Graacher Himmelreich Auslese

The great thing about killer Middle Mosel Auslese is the delicacy of the wine or as others have put it, the richness combined with the elegance. To get all that concentrated fruit on such a little frame with super clean botrytis is just awe-inspiring and the Germans do it on such a consistent basis. As I have said before the trio of Auslesen from Bert Selbach in 2005 is absolutely astounding. So I opened up the Graacher Himmelreich Auslese a couple of nights ago but my acid reflux was so bad I could only muster half a glass. Nothing to worry about as this was 2005 German Auslese and this wine could easily improve for weeks in my cave. Well that was not going to happen as I sucked it down last night. This filled out my check card of what makes Mosel Auslesen so great.

1) Eminently drinkable (took 40 minutes to finish the whole bottle!)
2) Incredible complexity
3) Clean pure botrytis
4) A smorgasbord of apple flavors mixed with lovely spice
5) Outstanding length
6) Crunchy icing-like texture
7) Delicacy (read: richness with elegance)
