As the title says....been imbibing vast levels of profound wines I cannot even keep track. On to the notes.
Had the 2005 Chateau de Hureau "Les Fevettes" last night and I am not sure what to make of it. This is their "1er Cru" wine per se. They make a "Village" wine, the "Les Fevettes" and the Grand Cru "Cuvee Lisagathe." The nose was promising with nice raspberry confit notes, tweed and lots of earthy mineral. The palate was rich, velvety and full of concentrated fleshy fruit. But there was a certain something lacking in the mid-palate and there also was alot of heat in this wine that continues right now as I sip it. It shows in a medicinal/ethanol type of heat. Maybe it needs age but usually heat does not go away. The tannins are there and the wine is balanced but the flavors and heat take away alot from this wine. Oh well you cannot win them all.
Also had a great Riesling from a little known region in Germany that does not get enough play, the Mittlerhein. This was a 2002 Ratzenberger Bacharacher Kabinett Trocken. Kabinett Trocken is a hard category to pull off and these Ratzenberger's have easily been the most succesful ones, of the few, that I have tasted. This had a soaring nose of peach, minerals, nectarines and some faint potpourri. The palate is very dry as the label indicates but there is a core of pure ripe fruit that is lovely. This finishes dry and minerally but for a wine of this vigor it is quite delicate and pretty. My last bottle and caught at the perfect time.
