Lots of controversial sports stories this week and I could not keep quiet. Seems to be an argument about what the biggest story is and what could have the biggest impact. Easy. This Tom Donaghy referee in the NBA who allegedly fixed games easily takes the cake as he, more than anybody on that court, has the power to change the outcome of the game. This throws into the question the credibility of the league results in games which he has refereed. It also opened up a Pandora's box that could possibly bring into question other referees calls and links to organized crime. Maybe Mark Cuban has a legitimate gripe in all of his tirades versus the referees. Who knows? This is a fascinating story and easily will have the most important long term impact of any sports story currently being played out.
The next story is Michael Vick getting indicted for dogfighting. Not much more needs to be said as the details of the indictment are horrifying. This story has a lot of tabloid appeal but is just another example of a young athlete with incredible potential potentially ruining his career and life over some indiscretion due to too much money too soon. Sad but this story will not have the long time impact that the NBA story has as there are many single athletes in football that are bad seeds. Lawrence Phillips, Rae Carruth, Terrel Owens, Ray Lewis, OJ Simpson to name a few. The NFL will easily get over this bad press and this will not stop anybody from watching or attending football games.
Barry Bonds pursuit of Hank Aaron's record is for me not that interesting due to the overexposure of the story by the media. I have been so saturated by stories of Barry Bonds, steroids and whether Bud Selig will or won't attend I just do not care anymore. He'll break it . . .life will go on . . . and then down the road A-Rod will break it. I am more interested to see if Barry Bonds will get indicted as the grand jury that is gathering evidence just got a six month extension and the prosecutor seems to think he will definetly have an indictment.
Now on to the Mets. They finally seem to be clicking. They are in LA scoring runs and stealing bases. Valentin is out. No big deal. I am comfortable with a platoon of Easley and Gotay. I like Gotay. Alou comes back soon and that will be a huge boost. I worry about Glavine. This is his last year. Got to get him to 300 wines soon so that monkey is off of his back. Bullpen is looking solid. Randolph is looking gimpy. The Carlos' seem to be snapping out of their slumps. Milledge seems more disciplined and less of an a-hole. Pedro could be a huge boost or a huge bust. I just heard September the other day. We will see. Overall I am feeling better about the Mets than I have in a while. Go New York Go!
