I have been trying to drink through my some oldies in my cellar recently because my palate has done a 180 since I have started buying wine. I've been shying away from Italian wines recently, especially Sangiovese. Just find it too clunky and chunky these days. I do like it with age but finding old Sangiovese on the market these days is tough. I also have not been feeling the way Sangiovese and new oak interact with each other. Too heavy for me these days as my palate is going towards the lighter and more ethereal wines. I used to love CA Petite Sirah. Boy those days are long gone. So this long ramble is about a wine I have drunk over the past two days, the
1999 Viticcio Prunaio. When I first tasted this wine five tears ago I loved it and bought three bottles for my cellar and even used it for a high falootin' wine dinner I did with Felidia. Well I cracked open one of these bad boys the other night and could not get bast the big unsubtle chunky flavors and ripe sweet oak. The wine seemed dead almost. Not over the hill dead but just dead with no soul. A zombie wine. It was juicy and chunky but just lacked excitement. Not a poorly made wine by any means and something I liked once . . .but not anymore. Boy has my palate changed.
I fear I have a cellar full of these "used to love" wines. At least you didn't buy a case! I never fell for that Petite Sirah...
ReplyDeleteI can't even tell you how horrible it is to go from one preference to another. There was once a blissful ignorant day that I would be perfectly happy with a glass of Two-Buck-Chuck. Then I got to tasting and taking wine classes and certification courses and I will actually just order a beer instead of drink bad wine now. It's not that the more expensive is better. I agree with you that it's about a subtlety of flavor that at an earlier point in your palette development just didn't matter. Now I'm a wine snob. How horrible! So I save the stuff I've outgrown for my friends who are still blissfully ignorant. :)
