Another Tasting Note

I also enjoyed over a three night period recently the 2005 Clemens Busch Vom Roten Schiefer. It was the last bottle in the store but no fret as I now how good the 2006 is and maybe how much more expensive it will be. This is a lovely Riesling and was one of my favorite drinkers since it has been in the store since around April. It is in a drier style and from the Lower Mosel and mostly (Lars correct me if you can) sourced from the Pundericher Marienburg vineyard where Clemens makes most if not all of his wines. Lovely nose of slate, apricot pits and a confectionary note. The wine has the slightest suggestion of sweetness but the structure, minerality and amazing mouthfeel are the story that is told here. There are resonating flavors of peach pit, apricot pit and nectarine pit. Like that sour yet sweet flesh as you tend to get to he core of these pit fruits. The flavor was prevalent and extremely pure. There was weight as this measured in at 12.0% but it only added to the brilliant mouthfeel of this wine. The finish is long, minerally and slatey. Just what Mosel should be. Now after meeting Clemens and tasting his higher end wines he is one of the true stars in the Mosel. I would say up and coming but he is there already. I also love the fact that he uses lower sulfur than almost anybody else in the Mosel and also love the fact that Clemens Busch is greatly admired by Richard Leroy.

  1. Lyle,

You're right. Vom Roten Schiefer comes mostly from a plot in Marienburg "from red slate." The other parcel with a red-slate soil is located in the Pündericher Nonnengarten east of the castle ruin.

    Best,
    Lars

  3. I actually just had this wine two nights ago with friends. I thought that it had a very distinct vegetal character to it, almost like candied celery. Did you get that when you tasted it? Everyone really liked it, though I did prefer the 2005 Knebel Winninger Hamm Kabinett Feinherb and the 2001 Ratzenberger Steeger St. Jost Grosses Gewachs. But a fine wine that Von Roten Schiefer. And for a killer price.
