A tasting note

Have not had too much wine recently but the ones I have had have been very good. On Friday night of this previous weekend I enjoyed the 2004 Jacques Puffeney Pinot Noir. We had a Jura tasting in the store recently and Asimov recently blogged about Jura so I was feeling Jurasstic and needed a fix. This bottle was tasted at the store during our tasting and showed fabulously. It opened up austere and with high acid and only a hint of red fruit. There was some new oak there but I knew the fruit was so solid it would suck up that oak and integrate beautifully. Within an hour it did and this was a very enjoyable beverage. High acid, dense sweet fed fruits, loads of earth and mineral and a long finish that is accented by that lip-smacking acidity. Methinks this needs five years in the cellar to sort itself out but if you have to drink it now a 2 hour decant is in order to smooth it out.

Agree in needs time; also agree its a fine bottle.
Tasted on several occasions with "consistent notes."
    Best, Jim

  2. I've heard of this Pinot but never had the pleasure of tasting it. Thanks for the information.

  3. I do love me some Puffeney. I've had the 2002 Pinot Noir and the 2004 Trousseau and both were sensual, racy, focused, and finished oh so cleanly. The Trousseau had a bit more depth but both are true finds.

  4. i do not agree... tends to oxidize too easily with air. best to hold or to enjoy now - though a bit bitter.

  5. A bit bitter upon opening but I found it goes away with major time in the bottle open.
