I was planning on offering this later in the year but I've gotten a non-stop stream of e-mails saying how great and what sensational values the Marie Demets Champagnes are. No one can believe what ridiculous and silly values these are. Ok, I did cheat by buying direct from the winery and offering a $45 champagne for under $30, but even at $45, this would be an excellent value. The Demets are fast becoming my favorite everyday and special occasion Champagnes. They are so clean, pure and precise that they can be drunk on a Tuesday night watching Heat-Pacers or for a multi-course dinner on a Saturday night with caviar and lobster.
I am honored to be able to offer the brand new NV Marie Demets blend for as little as $29.99 a 6-pack and $28.99 on the 12 bottle case. As many of you can attest to, a case price is very useful for this wine. It's amazing how much champagne you drink when it's really good and affordable - all the pleasure and no guilt. $28.99 for a Champagne of this quality is quite absurd and it puts to shame Champagnes at 2-3 times the price. I mean, is there any decent $30 and under Champagne any more? $40 seems to be the cutoff these days. The new blend is from the '11 and '12 vintages and is even a step up in quality than the previous '10/'09 blend. It is precise, delicate, pure, wonderfully fruited, concentrated and and just a slamming bottle of wine made Champagne from 100% Pinot Noir. Yes, 100% Pinot Noir for $28.99 a bottle. Unheard of, I tell ya! I know I sound like Crazy Eddie sometimes, but for the quality it does not get better than these Champagnes.
Below is some background from the 1st Marie Demets E-Mail.
Champagne, Champagne. Everyone loves a great bottle of Champagne. The only problem with Champagne is that it's generally very expensive for what you get. Finding a really good, really interesting bottle for under $30 is pretty much impossible. Being able to offer a terrific bottle of Champagne for under $30 from a producer that I really believe in has been a big goal of Fass Selections. I'm thrilled to be offering Marie Demets, one of the most exciting new producers in Champagne, for under $30 today.
I had been looking for a few good Champagne producers to round out my selection of producers and I hit the jackpot on my latest visit to France. Marie Demets was like a dream come true for me as the wines, in my opinion, have that German precision and purity but wrapped in Pinot Noir and bubbles. The quality for the money has to be the best I have ever tasted in Champagne.
I will not make grandiose statements unless I can back them up, and these are just stunning. I had heard from various wine people that you needed to be careful in the Aube as there is a lot of bad wine down there. From my limited visit to the Champagne region there is definitely a Red Sox-Yankees thing going on with the North of Champagne and the Aube. For me it seems rooted in jealousy, as Demets and other producers like Bouchard and Marie-Courtin are at the same qualitative level as some of the great small growers up north. So no wonder most people laughed when I said I was going to the Aube.
Marie Demets is in the very small town of Guye-Sur-Seine where the taxidermist is just as important as the Champagne producers (he is even on the signs with all the Champagne producers). They used to sell grapes to Bollinger and formed the estate in 1987 when Marie Brement married Alain Demets. Pierre, and his father Alain run the show now. Alain, looks a bit like Jean Gabin and has an old world charm that no one can resist. Their wines are as charming as they are.
The vineyards are different, as well, geologically from the vineyards up north. They are in the area that connects Sancerre to Pouilly-Fume near Chablis. Kimmeridgean overload in the ground there which really comes through aromatically and on the palate.
I am very lucky to have found this estate and the fruits of Pierre and Alain Demets tireless work will be tasted by hopefully as many people as possible. I am the first person to sell these wines in America, and it is an honor and a privilege.
