Champagne Doesn't Have to Be Overpriced...If you Buy It Straight from The Winery

I'm an absolute freak for blanc de blancs.  I love blanc de noir as well but well made blanc de blancs has everything that I love in white wine; that gorgeous, feminine quality, and the balance of fruit,
minerality and acidic backbone.  I didn't sell much of it in my previous lifetimes because the price of champagne had gotten so high, the price to value got out of whack. Well, when you are buying direct from the estate and finding brilliant newcomers to the game, you can get some incredible values and I have one today.  To be blunt, I think that this is the best value blanc de blancs on the US market today. I am biased but enough of you have tasted Fass Selections wines and Demets in particular to know the quality is right up there with the hyperbole. It is in the same class, quality-wise as the better grower champagnes in the $50-$60 range.

Today I am privileged to offer the NV Marie Demets Blanc de Blancs for as little as $34.99 on 4 bottles (per bottle).  This wine is simply classic. Lovely purity, depth and amazing yeasty character with intense minerals are all the hallmarks of this Champagne. Great sappy fruit and concentration with that trademark Marie Demets yeastiness. It needs an hour or two to really deliver and get into high gear. If I had to describe this wine in two words, it would be etherial intensity.  This will be my house bubbly yet again.  I'm warning you, I know when wineries are going to get hot and this one will - prices will go up so if you have cellar space, consider stocking up.

Every importer dreams of having an estate like Marie Demets. Lovely people, brilliant wines, great communicators and they live and make wine in an absolutely gorgeous small village in the Aube called Guy-sur-Seine. I got to know it very well as I was three hours early for my appointment there. As I have said in the past this town is so small and so in the middle of nowhere that the taxidermist is one of the most important people in the town. You may have read my previous e-mails on the Rose and the Tradition which are both sold out. Many of the important facts are in the previous e-mails so click through.  Because I like lists here are some bullet-points about Marie Demets. They are in the Aube which is Southern Champagne. The north of Champagne and south of Champagne have like a Vouvray/Montlouis Red Sox/Yankees rivalry.

  • These are some of the most pure and precise Champagnes for the price I have ever tasted.
  • They have a German-Riesling-like precision to them.
  • These champagnes don't yell they are here but are exercises in subtelty and beauty.
  • There might not be a better Champagne value in the world today.
  • The vineyards have more in common with Chablis than Champagne as the soil is Kimmeridgian.
  • They used to sell grapes to Bollinger.
  • The estate was founded in 1987.
  • I can't think of a better BDB in the market for the money.
  • The wine is amazing especially considering they are Pinot Noir specialists.
