is odd because Bize is such a hallowed estate. I believe it has nothing to do with the quality of the wine but the fetishization problem of a few producers every region has. In Corton Charlemagne there is Coche for high end, Bonneau du Martray as the classic stalwart and Bouchard as the negociant value star. Personally I think Bize crushes Bonneau du Martray and Bouchard. It is about as regal a Corton Charlemagne as there is. There is an undeniable power and richness but what makes this wine truly special is the freshness and the acidity along with the power. Power without freshness is not something I look for in wine.
I have a very limited amount of, what in my opinion, are the two best vintages of the '00 decade, the '04 and the '08. Because of the Euro, again, I can offer both at $134.99 on a 2-pack, mix and match. Compare the 2004 at $175 a bottle and there is no other 2008 around but comparable vintages like 2010 are at $200 a bottle. Even lesser vintages are at $200 a bottle now.
A very good friend and a client brought over the 2004 within the past 3-4 months and my note , which the whole world can see from 21 weeks ago on Delectable was, "So young. Amazingly linear and pure, deft use of oak, with lovely earth notes." By so young, for someone maybe not familiar with my shorthand, I mean, it is crazy how stuffed and dense and elegant and great this wine is now, but I know it is holding so much in reserve, but it is so good now, but I can only imagine how good it will be in the future. It is almost hard to comprehend. It is very rare that a wine will pass by my palate that is this young (11 years old!) that tastes this good but will be that much better in 4-6 years. So that's the 2004. The 2008 is from a very nervy high-acid vintage as well and is a wine, that I would wait 2-4 more years before pulling the cork. The better 2008's are taut and wound up now, but make no mistake, these are the two vintages of this wine you want.
