I drank my 2 bottles of the 2011 Beaune 1er Cru "Tuvilains" just the other week and they were glorious bottl es of Burgundy. Crazy vivid aromatics, a long winding finish and in that elegant, soil-driven Murat style. The 2012 is much better than the 2011 which was better than 2010.
What
else can I say about Hervé Murat that most of you don't already know?
He is a phenomenon, a customer favorite and one of our best selling
producers, for good reason. I've snared a smallish allocation of this
wine as it mostly sold in France.
I am thrilled to sell the 2012 Hervé Murat Beaune 1er "Tuvilains for $47.99 on the 4-pack. The Les Tuvilains is a very serious bottle of Beaune. One of the best Beaune wines I have had. One of those that will be great now, great in 10 years, and awesome in 20+. After you get done swimming in Hervé's stunning aromatics from this wine, it has all the ripe, juicy fruit you can imagine along with sweet and ripe tannins all delivered on such a fine plane of elegance and minerals. The trademark Murat acidity gives it a beguiling freshness The finish is long and complex.
The 2012 amplitude and volume is there in spades. It is remarkable wine
with serious structure and I think has the ability to age for 25-30
years. Serious structure here. This wine would be $80 through standard 3 tier distribution based on my cost (even with the strong dollar and low markup to keep it under $50). It would be worth it at that price.
Many great winemakers have vineyards that they make famous: Drouhin Clos des Mouches, Henri Jayer/Cros Parantoux 1er Cru and De Montille/Pommard Les Rugiens, for example. For Hervé Murat, it will be his estate bottled Premier Cru "Les Tuvilains."
There is not much to go around as yields were scary low,
but grab all and any as they will continue to become more and more
scarce and expensive. This is my favorite 1er Cru from Herve because it
is a so called "sleeper" 1er Cru yet Herve gets so much out of it, he
will singularly make it famous.
The more I drink Herve's wines the more I believe he is a star on the level of a PYCM or David Moret or Barthod.
Those 2010's I initially offered were priced amazingly and I had a
feeling the demand from Fass Selections customers and the increasing demand in France would make the prices go up some and they did.
The
vines for this were planted in 1947 and Murat owns them. He has .50 ha
in this 1er Cru. It is on the Pommard (village in Burgundy that creates
big, structured wines that need lots of age) side of Beaune and that
results in a slightly more structured iteration of Beaune.
The
wines are, and all of them I might add are very traditional, yet with
enough fruit for early consumption. They are clearly made in a vin de
garde style and can be closed at times. One thing I've learned about
Hervé's wines is that they need air and when they are shut, they are
very unyielding and charmless. But give them time and a good decant,
sing to them if need be, because it will be worth it. Please do not be
misled by the prices - these are serious, complex, structured wines and
as such, they can require a decant when drunk young.
February Ship
We
have a shipment that has just arrived in the States and AMEDEO is
processing our inventory in and we are gearing up to ship in mid-late
February, depending on weather and location. This was supposed to be the
November ship but got held up because of the wine harvest. No worries
if your region is too cold as we will ship again in April/May and will
have even more wine by then. Our new associate, Peter Smith, will be
contacting you for your Feb and April/May ships.
WE NOW SHIP TO MASSACHUSETTS!
In February, Amedeo will ship to Massachusetts. We are thrilled about this.
Office Hours
I
love drinking and selecting wines - but my passion for teaching people
about wine is almost as big. I'm happy to announce a block of time each
day where people can call me just to chat about wine in general. These
blocks are NOT intended to sell wine (I do that all day). This is to
talk to me about wine pairings or great producers or how long to age
wines or styles of wine making or the latest wine controversy. My goal
is to help people learn more about wine and enjoy it more. Call me at 917-912-4355 from 4-7 EST Monday - Friday.
