2014 is a Classic, Classic Vintage for Chablis Lovers.
And Our Young Star Sébastien Dampt Nails It.
Burghound Rated It Best Bang for Your Buck.
I loved Sébastien Dampt's 2011s, 2012s and 2013s. 2011, 2012, 2013 are great vintages, but maybe not really classic Chablis. These vintages showed me more of the skill of Sebastien as a winemaker as he managed to create some terrific Chablis tension in vintages that did not give the normal climate conditions that can lead to classic Chablis. Sébastien is the son of Daniel Dampt, one of my favorite producers in Chablis and he definitely used everything he learned from his father to bring classic Chablis traits to his wines in these vintages.
I was thrilled to taste with Sebastien Dampt yesterday as 2014 is a vintage that I will proclaim is where classic Chablis is back. All the tension, nervousness, minerality and balancing, bright acidity are back, and they are back in spades. Sebastien compared it to 2010, 2008. Maybe a synthesis of 2011/2010 he opined. But one thing we all agreed on was that it was a classic vintage.
On top of that, the strong dollar and my direct from the winery pricing allows me to offer premier cru Chablis from one of the region's most exciting young producers at under $25. I am thrilled to offer the 2014 Sébastien Dampt Côte de Léchet 1er Cru for as little as $24.99 on the 4 pack.
On the palate, the wine is the definition of tensile; it's almost alive with acidity and minerality. The urgency that this wine delivers on your palate is insane. Fruit? Some. But mineral driven salinity? Loads. So luscious and mouthwatering like only mineral-driven white wine from Chablis can be. There is nothing like the mineral sap from a classic example of palate staining mineral driven 1er Cru Chablis. No where in the wine world can this be reproduced. People always say this or that is Burgundian but do you ever hear someone say that this is "Chablisien?" No, because it is not and never will be if it doesn't come from Chablis. I went ape over this wine. You cannot have enough of this wine. Famed Burgundy critic Allen Meadows rated the 2012 a "Best Bang for Your Buck" (at a $32 price point, not our $24.99). I'd link to the article but it was in an adult magazine and I'm afraid this will cause this E-Mail to be blocked (if you want a link to the article, please E-Mail me).
Sébastien Dampt is one of the bright young stars in Chablis. His three Premier Crus are all knockouts and he has been producing some wonderful Grand Cru Chablis under the Maison Dampt label. He's also a great guy to work with. Enjoy.
Office Hours
I love drinking and selecting wines - but my passion for teaching people about wine is almost as big. I'm happy to announce a block of time each day where people can call me just to chat about wine in general. These blocks are NOT intended to sell wine (I do that all day). This is to talk to me about wine pairings or great producers or how long to age wines or styles of wine making or the latest wine controversy. My goal is to help people learn more about wine and enjoy it more. Call me at 917-912-4355 from 4-7 EST Monday - Friday.
