some 2012 PYCM's that you don't see that often.
PYCM is the current chosen one of the moment in Burgundy and with good reason. The style here is racy as they come with his model being Riesling. He also knows his sites extremely well and in one case today handpicked the vineyard. I also love him and his operation because he is not an appellation snob. From Montrachet all the way down to Bourgogne Blanc for every bottle he gives them the attention they deserve and nothing gets slighted. Every bottle I've had drinks higher than it should be. I love that he also makes wines in not so popular appellations. That is the sign of a true Burgundian, They love all terroir. And these bargian value style PYCM's age. Not as long as the Meursault Perrieres or Montrachet but longer than you'd expect. I offered a while back some of his PernandVergelesses 1er Cru "En Caradeaux" and today I have two more off the beaten track appellations given a "make-over" by Pierre-Yves. Both of these wines are from the 2012 vintage which at the village and regional level is drinking superbly at the moment. I've had a Chablis 1er Cru, Meursault and HCDN Blanc this week, all from 2012, and all 3 were wide open and fully expressive. So when I saw this small parcel I grabbed it.
First up is the 2012 PYCM Rully Les Cailloux, for as little as $37.99 on a 3-pack, which is absolutely delicious in 2012. Hedonistic but with a lovely stoney edge. Amazing purity of citrus fruits, great intensity and vividness to the fruit with crunchy and very present acidity. Compact like 2012 tends to be. And this will age for 4-7 years. Easy. What a wine. Salty and sappy on the long finish. This is limited and very allocated.
Up next is a brilliant bottle of wine in an appellation where there are not that many brilliant bottles of wine. And that is Montagny. It's warmer than other areas of the Chalonnaise, but Pierre-Yves handpicked the site because of its cooler weather. The 2012 PYCM Montagny 1er Cru "Les Burnins" is a drop dead gorgeous wine for $39.99 on a 3-pack. It is in Pierre-Yves typical bracing and Riesling-esque style. He picks early for Montagny and what results is the best wine I have ever tasted from Montagny. Really well defined and detailed with tremendous fruit and serious classy elegant minerality. The finish washes your palate in minerals. Utmost finesse and so juicy and drinking out of its mind now and I have a feeling it will for the next 3-5 years.
