Fass Selections #UNICORNWINES

While the talk of the Internet wine scene and the hipster somms is of #unicornwines, which is essentially a wine that is so rare they dole it out, bottle by bottle in some cases, from the source to the end drinker. It's hard to get, everyone is talking about it and they have almost universal praise. To take a small page out of the Unicorn Wine Owner's Manual here are the top 8 Fass Selections Unicorn Wines.

Henrik Moebitz Weissburgunder - I deal directly with Henrik and in a good vintage he'll make 380 bottles. I've never gotten more than 24 and usually less than that. I've always said this is the best Weissburgunder in Germany. And it is. Had an '01 recently at dinner with Henrik and it was astonishing for its freshness and purity at 14 years of age. They are also thrilling young but 5-10 years should do it. Don't ask me about this wine. Ever.

Henrick Moebitz Kanzell and Koepfle Spatburgunder - To those who have been lucky enough to taste and enjoy these wines you know these are on the short list of the top Pinots in Germany. Henrik is a bio-chemist for his day job and really won't ever increase production so whatever I get I get. I am thankful. These are pure, picked earlier than everyone else, have vibrant acids and as the vines get older and Henrik improves they will only get better. If you supported Henrik from the beginning you'll continue to get wine. If not, hope someone dies or refuses their whole or partial allocation.

Vincent Ledy Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru "La Porrets St. Georges" - With 2012 being the debut vintage of this wine, it was born a unicorn as they say. 350 bottles, 12 hl/ha and no expense spared in the raising of this wine. Just an epic, Faustian bottle of NSG and good luck getting it. Production increased mildly in 2013/2104 but only by minimal percentage points.

Enderle & Moll "Auswahlen" - This was debuted in 2013 and is a blend of their top 3 sites. It won't be delivered till Spring but just wait as this might be the best Pinot Noir ever made in Germany. Stunning depth, purity, aromas and agaebility. There is never enough. This is pre-unicorn as no one has tasted it yet.

Domaine Berlancourt Bourgogne Rose - I haven't even sold this yet. I got sent two bottles as samples and was beyond blown away. That was the 2011. No wine for me in 12,13,14, and maybe a little in 15. They make wine on the side and run a hotel full time. One day I'll get it and it won't be enough.

Laible Plauerlain Riesling GG - a wine so rare that they won't give it to me. I still want to offer it. One day. I've only tasted the 08. And I can still taste it.

Remi Poisot Romanee St. Vivant - He has so little of this it is silly. I got none in 11, 26 bottles in 2012 and 32 bottles in 2013. My allocation is going up! But for RSV, which starts at $500 a bottle, this at $230-$275 is a steal of the century in Grand Cru Burgundy, if you can find it. It is seamless, sexy and so pure. It oozes class, vivid fruit and has a finish that just needs to be experienced.

Gilles Berlioz Chignin Bergeron"Les Christine" - Gilles best wine that debuted in 2014 this old vines Roussanne Cuvee is one of the best Roussanne's I've ever had giving Beaucastel Roussanne VV a run for the money at less than half the price. The wine is a thrill a second. Named after his wife and a worker at the Domaine who is also named Christine. It is vinified in an egg.
