It's been a while since I've introduced a new a Burgundy estate as I taste and taste and taste but I'm a
picky guy and really only want the best possible wines for the money. I did catch lighting in a bottle with the young Laurent Boussey, who is the rare switch-hitter in that he is as adept as reds as he is with whites. These are old school, classic and traditional as they can get, but with wonderful, deep incredible fruit and Laurent has some very serious terroir as his father retired recently and he now has vineyards in 24 appellations.
I don't want to brag but just remind you of some of the winemakers that I've sold early that have become stars:
- Thomas Bouley
- Julien Cruchandeau
- Florent Garaudet
- Domaine Duroche
- Jerome Galeyrand
- Chavy Chouet
- Caillez Lemaire
- Perseval Farge
- Martin Muellen
Laurent Boussey is in that league and he already has terrific terroir.

Up next I've got the Fass Selections sweet spot Burgundy price point wine. I love selling village wines like Chassagne, Meursault and Puligny for around $40 a bottle. These are great villages that make exceptional wines and through my buying direct I get to offer these awesome wines for $40 or under. Those things converge again today with the 2015 Laurent Boussey Meursault Vieilles Vignes for $37.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. First thing in my notes is that I say it tastes like a '14. I don't know how Laurent gets the freshness he does but he is a master of this. This is a stunning wine. I tasted side by side with the '14 and decided to go with the '15. It had similar energy to the '14 but seemed more complex and complete. Just a gorgeous nose of classic Meursault aromas but more on the candied rocks and mineral side with less butter and nuts. I love this style of Meursault. The freshness on the palate is just amazing and there is such impressive purity. Terrific finesse and elegance as that seems to be his style with the whites along with a serious structure that portends a nice 10-15 year future ahead of it. Again, perfectly integrated oak. Ridiculous finish pumps out minerals and leaves your mouth wanting more. No rush at all on this but hard to resist. Please don't let anyone tell you the 15s lack anything. These wines have all the energy and minerality one expects out of great white Burgundy.
Laurent started his own Domaine in 2003 after working with his father for a few years after he graduated wine school. He only had Monthelie red and white, one white Monthelie 1er Cru and red and white Bourgogne. 2 hectares. He turned 2 hectares into 14. 7 came from his father who retired and he inherited them, and the rest came from Laurent's relentless hard work and persistence. He told me was lucky and knows it as he knew many people who were retiring and who had parcels for acquiring. It's pretty amazing to go from 2 to 7 and then 7 to 14 with so many great appellations. I love the style at Domaine Laurent Boussey. Freshness is the name of the game here. These are so Fassy and fit into the core principles of what I look for in an estate. (List principles here). Having said that the fruit and terroir expression Laurent gets from his wines is nothing short of sensational. I was really wowed by so many of his wines. There is no one to compare him to in my book really. His wines are so different than Florent Garaudet, my other producer in Monthelie. Laurent has Monthelie village and various 1er Crus in red and white, Volnay village and a killer 1er Cru, Pommard, Beaune, along with today's offerings.
