Stunning Small Production Grand Cru Burgundy for Under $80
- Corton Bressandes Normally Costs $110+
Both Have Traditional Poisot Complexity, Balance and Minerality
- But the 2015 Fruit Makes them More Drinkable Young
"Rémi Poisot described the 2015 vintage as "truly a beautiful vintage that comes perhaps once a decade if that."
I always love visiting Remi Poisot as he is so relaxed, laid back and a gentle kind man. As the 15 Red Burgundy hype machine continues to churn I am offering Remi's wines a bit earlier than usual as he is bottling now in April for '15. So I can get these over here the Fall. If someone asked me what is Remi's style, I'd have to say as classic as it gets without being too old school. He gets incredible fruit quality that is so clean and so fresh. And deep. Each one punches above their weight. Especially in 15. The fruit is breathtaking. Remi's 15s are just astonishing. From Pernand to RSV there is a sweet intensity that is just fantastic. They are structured as usual but the intense fruit makes it a deceptive structure. It is there and ideally these wines need to be laid down, but they will be pretty irresistible in their youth. I mean tasting them out of barrel in Remi's cellar I could have bottled them now and drank them with my dinner tonight. But my youthful exuberance might not be welcome advice as in 4-6 years this wine will slay.
First up is the stunning and alas very limited 2015 Remi Poisot Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru "En Carradeaux" for as little as $39.99 a 4-pack. Yields were very very small in 2015 but quality is super high. The wine is as good if not better than the legendary 2012, which I had a bottle of other night and you can find my note here. But the 15 runs in a similar vein with more cut and clarity and of course more fruit. Terrific high toned nose. Confectionary and mineral with huge dark licorice aromas. Real intense mineral streak along with all that fruit. Terrific. Deep and layered. Palate is bonkers. Deep, rich and ripe with ample sweet fruit and velvet tannins. The freshness combined with all that fruit is beyond epic. Awesome complexity and depth. So deep, cuts a swath on the palate. So long, sappy and complex. A great 1er Cru from Pernand. The thrust, fruit quality and depth set this apart from most Pernands I've had. For the points crowd Allen Meadows of Burghound gave it 89-92. I'd tend to go on the higher side as I tasted it even before Alan Meadows and it was showing great, with no reduction as he notes. This a 93+ in my book if I gave scores! Wait, I just did. This is very limited and very allocated. Below is the BH review.
"Reduction presently flattens the underlying fruit though there is both good freshness and detail to the delicious and velvet-textured medium weight flavors that exhibit a lovely minerality on the relatively complex and robust finale. This isn't especially refined but it is persistent and well-balanced plus it's built to reward moderate cellaring."- 89-92 pts, Burghound
Up next is my favorite wine to drink from Remy young. The 2015 Remi Poisot Corton Bressandes from 40-50 year old vines can be had for as little as $79.99 NET. Even in Remi's super cold cellar it showed brilliantly. Every bottle I've opened up stateside I always think is going to be insanely closed, and it sings and soars like the Grand Cru it is. Gloriously open with superb depth, aromas, deep sweet and sappy fruit and texture for days. The Pinot Noir trifecta. Deftly mineral nose with insanely sweet fruit. Crunchy palate and great cut and precise like the finest diamond in the world. The complexity is incredible. Gorgeous purity and unending length. Remi really got astonishing freshness in his 15s. I am lucky I have these wines. Bressandes is the most feminine of the Corton GCs and has such "sweet" fruit. I think the sweetest of any Corton GC in my experience. This is a very wow wine and a reason we drink Burgundy wine. Here is Burghound's note.
"This is also mildly reduced though in this case it appears reasonably clear that the underlying fruit is quite ripe. There is both more volume and a finer mouth feel to the sleekly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension, all wrapped in a firm, highly complex and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is markedly firmer and will require at least some patience." - 91-93 pts, Burghound
