Today I have something ridiculously special. And of course it is on a Saturday. I'm not sure what is
different about Saturday offers. I've got a system that I adhere to when planning the offers and whatever doesn't fit in that schematic goes on a Saturday. It's more of a laid back chill vibe in the Saturday offers. I've grown to love them. And love writing them.
I emailed Paul Weltner about planning out some future offers and he told me he did not make any Riesling GG from Hoheleite in 2016. I was kind of bummed as long time list members know I always offer the two GGs together. Two wines is pretty critical in certain emails. This was one of them.
He mentions though as a backup plan that he has a small stash of some 2012 Hoheleite GG Riesling which I can offer for $44.99 on a 4-pack. He recently gave a bottle to a very famous Austrian Wine Journalist and the critic said it was the best Riesling he'd ever had. You gotta remember that he is Austrian and they don't really do the hyperbole like we do in America and at Fass Selections. Paul asked me if I had any left. I did. One bottle. Which I opened for this email. And guess what? It's not quite the best Riesling I've ever had but holy moly was this wine incredible. It's the best Riesling I've had this year and I drink and taste a lot of Riesling. The wine has that extra magic that only age can give. The wine is truly absolutely explosive on the palate yet at the same time so complex. You just gotta wait. Which I've noticed get increasingly harder to do by the wine consuming public so wine that is mature or on its way to mature seems to be more coveted than ever before. I can't tell you how rare it is to be able to offer a perfectly cellared from the estate wine that is just entering its drinking window now. This wine is emotional.
Here's my Delectable Note from yesterday:
Holy crap! At 5.5 years old this has come alive. Wow. Stunning ethereal nose of white flowers, lanolin like in a Roches Neuves single vineyard Saumur Blanc, hint of grapefruit, some sweet greens, lemon zest, so complex. After some air the deep Franken minerality comes out. Also a confectionery aroma. Like brown sugar on pink grapefruit. What a palate though. Stunning in its elegance and finesse. So chisled and clean with opulence, depth and slamming acidity to bring it all home. Exquisite inner mouth perfume. Complex like nothing else and so juicy. Oh man is this juicy. It is a wine that momentarily turns your mouth into a pump. This is as epic as I've ever had a wine from Franken. Holy crap this is good. Earth shatteringly great wine.
