These Are Ridiculous Values Because I Buy Direct
The Best Goldtropfchen Vintage Since 2001
Goldtropfchen Is One of My Favorite Vineyards in Germany and these Wines Are Iconic - Must Buys
Only at Fass Selections would you see the first offerings of a Mosel producer be pinot noir. But the
Up first is the 2015 Spater-Veit Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Spatlese Trocken Reserve for $24.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. This clocked in at 5 grams per liter of RS so it is legally trocken. This wine is magic. Pure magic. Stunning in every way, including pride. All the whites are spontaneously fermented in stainless steel tanks and then finished off in traditional fuder which gives them a hint of roundness. But these Rieslings have brilliant acidity depth and purity of flavor. This really was spectacular. Amazingly mineral and expressive nose with luscious scents of peaches and other stone fruits. Stunning vivid and wafting aromas. Palate had that creaminess I see in aged fruity versions and it was very compelling here adding to the crunchy minerals and pointed intense acids. Incredibly chiseled and detailed wine. Crackling, creamy palate with great purity and freshness. A palate of great contrasts and I anticipate the creaminess and opulence gaining more with age. Mineral as a wine as I've ever had from Goldtropfchen. I was amazed at how much the wines improved since I last tasted them 15 years ago. These can hold a serious candle to Rheinhold Haart but also AJ Adam or Julian Haart. These are serious wines with brilliant aging ability. When Goldtropfchen ages it picks up a wonderful creamy opulent texture which I know will contrast so well with the the thundering acids of 2015.
Up next is one of the great sweet values I've ever encountered, the 2015 Spater Veit Piesporter Goldtropfchen Spatlese for $24.99 a bottle on a 4-Pack. Really high-toned florality on the nose. The palate has an elegant yet powerful impression with tangy red fruits and awesome purity. Almost a gamey foie gras thing on the finish. Besides the textbook acidity that was lively, flavorful, electric, long, clingy, crunchy and warm, the wine changed in my class constantly. More importantly each iteration was a great improvement from before. Even though before was as good as I thought it was going to get. Ultimately the final iteration before it was time to taste the Pinot Noir showed the classic Goldtropfchen profile of opulence balanced slatey minerality. Another interesting quality developed after some serious aeration. The wine turned holographic on us. At the end of the finish were these tiny burst of acid bubbles that had the overall flavor of the wine in these little spurts of acid-liquid that resonated on the finish. Remarkable. I took a sip to clear my glass at one point and there must of been the tiniest splash in there and the flavor was just explosive from that tiny bit. Holographic wine. The quality of this wine was off the charts.
