More from Pascal Bouley's Breakout Vintage (2015): A 1er Cru Volnay that Is the Pinnacle of Elegance and a Hedonistic Pommard

2015 Volnay 1er Cru Monopole "Les Grands Champs"
 - As Good, If Not Better, Than Their Clos de Chenes
 - A Master Class in the Elegance and Complexity of Volnay
 - Will Age for 15-35 Years
2015 Village Pommard
 - Delicious, Dark Fruited, Complex, Deep, Insanely Juicy and Ready to Go
 - A Burghound Top Value of the Vintage!

I'm still thinking about the Pascal Bouley 2015s and in the usual humble way of the
Burgundians, young Pierrick is quoted as saying in the latest BH, "Overall, I like the vintage a great deal as it is generous yet serious and should age extremely well." I'd like to add some classic Fass hyperbole I that somewhat blahzay statement. 2015 is the best vintage I've tasted at Pascal Bouley since I've been working with them. They are so good. The 14s are slammed shut now and like with Billard Gonnet in Pommard in vintages like '14 that are considered classic the wines tend to close down hard. With all good things in life, you have to wait for the Pascal Bouley wines to develop. Once they do, the ROI is crazy. I've had killer 90s and 85s at the estate which are two vintages in line with 2015 and I think will have a similar aging curve. I didn't taste those young but I can imagine they were similar to the 15s if not a bit lesser as I think young Pierrick is an exceptional winemaking talent and advances in winemaking ideology make 15 and 16 the best I've tasted there.

Up first is what I believe to be their top wine and longest ager, the 2015 Pascal Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Monopole "Les Grands Champs" for $59.99 a bottle on a 3-pack. The vineyard is mostly village level but their monopole is in a special section and is the only part classified as 1er Cru. It is a very special wine and arguably with the Clos du Chenes their top Volnay. It is the pinnacle of elegance in their lineup and has some of the sexiest and silkiest tannins imaginable. Having said this 15 on the day I tasted seemed to be the most limited in its accessibility from a young age. While all the other 1er Crus showed open, this was not as is par for the course for this 1er Cru. This is the Cru I would serve to show someone the finesse of Volnay. It is a very special wine in 2015 and one I think will  age for 15-25 years. It has an outrageously complex nose with intoxicatingly deep and sensual aromas - lilac city. There is a serious mineral drive to the nose.  Very intense in the mouth and shows the concentration and power of the vintage but the classic finesse-driven subtlety of this great site. It is like over the top juicy and intense with brilliant deep and intense fruit. There is exceptional purity and top notch finesse. There is power here as well but it is hidden among the silky late breaking tannins. This is a monument to the vintage. This is limited and so far as I know, I'm the only person who has over sold this ultra rare 1er Cru. I'd approach this in 2024 or so. Then it can last 30 years. Below is Burghounds note which is 89-92 points. The '14 wound up with 91, I think this should end up higher. It's more substantial than the 14.

"Background trace of wood can be found on the very ripe cassis, black cherry and anise-scented nose. The impressively rich flavors manage to retain reasonably good definition and tension while delivering sneaky good length on the very firm, dusty and mouth coating finale." 89-92 pts. BH

One thing I've noticed across my tastings of 2015's is that Pommard did very very well. So in 2015, I'm offering more Pommard than I normally would as they just were so good. Village Pommard absolutely rocks in 2015. The 2015 Pascal Bouley Pommard for $37.99 a bottle on a 4-pack is a stunner and also is one of Burghound's top values of the vintage. I love a good Pommard with its super intense minerality, deep soil tones, and incredibly concentrated and deep fruit. They also are forever in top vintages. This one will age forever but man is it a great drink now if you like super intense young wine from fruit-driven vintages. I mean, who doesn't?  This wine is one of the most hedonistic and awesome "hits way above its weight class" wines I'll sell in 2015. The nose is big and vast. Super mineral with black and dark red fruits. The palate is very large scaled but impressively concentrated and elegant. This pumps fruit out. It's slippery yet so serious. It is super fresh with all that deep, dark and dense fruit. This is a big boy now and will age gracefully for 20 years. Burghound gave it 89-91 points and made it a top value of the vintage. Below is his note.

"A notably fresher nose exhibits aromas of cool and surprisingly elegant red and dark pinot fruit, floral and soft earth nuances. There is excellent punch and a subtle minerality suffusing the delicious, precise and intense flavors that possess only a trace of rusticity on the clean and focused finish. If you have the patience to cellar this for a few years, this is worth checking out." 89-91 BH
