I've never sold a wine where my customers' opinions were so divergent. On the one hand, I have a very sophisticated Princeton grad partner (who is very hard to please) who thinks that the Marie Demets wines are absolutely delicious. On the other hand, one of my top customers (and a serious wine geek) thinks that they are not uber geeky enough. And you know what? They are both correct.
The wines of Marie Demets have some of the most glorious, clean fruit in my entire portfolio. Demets is in the south of Champagne (the Aube) where it is a bit warmer and the fruit is riper. You cannot drink the wines and not feel a bit of joy because they are so delicious. But (other than the 19th century), the fruit is dominant. These are not wines to sniff and swirl while you catch up on your Kierkegaard and ponder the meaning of life. These are wines to celebrate life. I have served these wines to dozens of people from complete novices to serious drinkers. Pretty much everyone loves them other than a small category of super elite Champagne geeks. I mean LOVES, LOVES, LOVES them (add heart emojis). But if you like your Champagne low in fruit, mineral-driven and super geeky and complex, these are likely not for you.
Go buy a bottle of any entry level Grand Marque for $35-$40. These will blow it away. Serve them
at a party and everyone will love you.
The first wine is the NV Marie Demets Tradition for as little as $27.99 on a 4-pack and is 100% gorgeous, luscious giving, rich pinot noir fruit. So well balanced and not a hair out of place. I challenge you not to smile when you drink it. Had a bad day? This will cheer you up. It definitely has that acid balance and mineral backbone, but this is a wine that you drink off of its stunning, rich pinot fruit. The Tradition is so damn delicious. Full of orchard fruits, precise and with a light creamy yet effusive mousse. This is $28 Champagne. I repeat Twenty Eight Dollar Champagne. The only Champagnes I've seen at this price have been industrial tasting swill on closeout. I can sell it for this because I buy them from the estate and the dollar is still relatively strong.
The second wine is a monster of a saignee rose. The NV Marie Demets Rose "Cuvee Rubis" for $34.99 a bottle on a 4-pack is a beast and a value. The Rose is wonderful as well, being rich and full of deep Pinot fruit with a rich orchard fruit character and loads of super fresh raspberries. Lovely earth tones and a serious almost gout de terroir you really only find in Red Burgundy and the red wines of the Cotes de Auxerre. It really is almost sparkling red Burgundy. It has enough fruit that you can drink it with a steak and it won't get lost.
This is the Demets wine for more geeky Champagne drinkers. I can offer the NV Marie Demets Cuvee 19m Siecle for $36.99 a bottle on a 4-pack. This is a complex bottle of wine and very different from the other Marie Demets wines. Very different. Most, besides the BDB, are all or dominantly Pinot Noir. The fruitiness and elegance of Pinot Noir along with the yeasty minerality of Chardonnay make this a thrilling wine. Additionally, the wine has been deftly aged in oak for 18 months giving it additional complexity. The nose starts off very, very complex but the classic Demets finesse is there in spades and spills over to the delicate, yet very complex and yeasty palate. It is so persistent on the palate with an incredibly long finish. There is also an explosion of fruit on the mid palate that delivers on the nuanced fruit/mineral finish. Almost sappy. Deep, crunchy and loaded with cooking spices with so much delicacy yet also some serious stuffing as well. The swath it cuts on the palate is very impressive and it has a very sappy, long, detailed and very delineated finish. The wine is NOT released for 3-4 years. 40% is fermented in barrels and they consider this their "deluxe" cuvee.
