- Special Case Price For Riesling Is $17.99!

It's relatively easy to find great wine generally for $50 a bottle or more if you know what you're doing. But to find great wine under $20 is an accomplishment. There really is only one country that does this consistently and that is Germany. The category of Gutsweine is a very misunderstood category.  It's like Bourgogne Blanc in a sense.  Much of it is forgettable but it all depends on the producer.

But at top producers, like Julianne Eller's winery Juwel, the Gutsweine is the star just asmuch as her one GG style wine and her Spätburgunder. She puts the same effort into these wines as her other wines up the ladder. I've offered the Weissburgunder and the Riesling in the past but this year I have to offer them all as they are so brilliant and I'll be offering case pricing at mix and match. These all taste like $30-$35 wines. She's got a lot going for her with the 2018s because the sweet spot is definitely the Rheinhessen. The level for the base wines is better than I have ever tasted. Juliane's set of Gutsweine  in 2018 are masterpieces of the genre.  I spent 3 days with them last month and they never let up.  I encourage you to buy all 4 as it is so fun to compare them. They are all $19.99 on a 4-pack. The Riesling is $17.99 on a Case and that price can be mixed and matched with the other 3 wines on case purchases.

The Wines
First up is the 2018 Juwel Silvaner and my goodness this is slamming. 2018 is so so good and this Silvaner is just a benchmark. Terrific nose of herbal vegetables. Which is a classic Silvaner trait. Hints of blackcurrant, ocean air, seashells and just so clean. The nose was flinty, herbal, superbly mineral.

Palate is ripe and juicy with terrific clarity and freshness. Nicely made and long. Generous on the palate and so clean.  Really nice richness.

Tons of minerals and herbals on the finish. Also nice black current fruit echoes on the finish.

It drinks just so much better than any wine under $20. Especially Silvaner. Lots of bad Silvaner out
there under $20. But when you find a good wine you hoard it as with food, next to Chardonnay and Chenin, Silvaner is just as good and possibly even more enraging.

On Day 2 it was even better. and the palate delivered with juicy, ripe fruit with great mineral/herbal/tropical/vegetable all intertwined like a gorgeous mosaic. Terrific softness and ripe crunch at the same time. Very well made. Has the richness of Sylvaner from the Rheinhessen but also the floral herbal elements more in line with Franken .  This is remarkable.

Next up is the 2018 Juwel Grauburgunder. Man is this racy! Big stone fruits on the nose and just  huge clearly defined minerals grabs your attention.  Also a lovely hint of sponti that adds to the allure. Palate is so so juicy and so well made. So pure. Stunning balance and texture. So clean. Echoing depth on the finish here on this Gutsweine. Terrific. Such a lovely expression of Pinot Gris in a racy style. Great long and complex finish. On Day 2  Huge stoney minerality. Lovely green vegetables and vineyard peach. So many wet stones. Killer stuff. Rich yet tensile with extremely attractive minerality and a limestone feeling. Great length and juiciness. Again so well made. Better on day 2. How is this wine so much better on Day 2. Just an insane value here.

Next go we have the 2018 Juwel Weissburgunder. Lovely classic nose of pear, apple, spice and intense minerality. Very wafting nose. Juicy, deep and ripe with lovely clarity and richness along with juxtaposing freshness. Great mouthfeel. These 18 Juwel Gutsweines are great wine and insane values. Why do people drink Chardonnay at this price point? Under $20. On Day 2  the nose had tons of apple, pear and a brooding sense of richness, but allied with also a wonderful minerality.

Palate is complex and juicy with so much minerality and juicy fruit. Deep and textured with great crunch and crackle of clearly defined fruit and mineral. Persistent and super pure. Great. Just amazing how great these are on day 2.

And finally the wine where it all started the great 2018 Juwel Riesling. Best one ever in 2018 maybe. Always a killer value amongst a sea of competition and it always stands tall. Gorgeous nose of succulent fruit and wonderful minerality. Apricot. Apple. Screaming clean ocean air. Such a refined nose with great clarity.

Terrific juiciness and palate presence with loads of gorgeous minerality and finishes with a nice herbal and tangerine streak. Hint of opulence. Lovely acidity and freshness. Awesome texture and depth and as it airs it gets sweet tart like. Awesome! On day 2 even better. Friendly, ripe and deep nose. Big fruit, lovely steely minerals. Ripe and juicy with loads of texture and extract. Incredible for what it is. Great overnight improvement. Terrific finish and so lively. Playful yet serious and deep.
