The Winery
The founder of La Morra's Dosio clearly had a vision. It was to produce wines in the traditional style but with consistent and careful winemaking technique. As we call it at Fass Selections, "Polished
Traditional". Rather than the usual approach of having a consulting oenologist, the estate is just large enough to afford a full time winemaker, Marco Dotta (pictured at right), who is responsible for the vineyards as well as all aspects of winemaking. This is another winery that has not really focused on the US market and the wines are not really available here. Discovering this estate was the result of a tremendous amount of digging around the Langhe (and a lot of drinking wine that was mediocre and worse). The winery and vineyards are located at a nicely high elevation (500 meters plus) which results in Baroli that have terrific terroir expression, classic Nebbiolo profiles and are incredibly well balanced. They have a significant stash of older vintages on hand which is a testament to the extraordinary ability for these wines to age. Back to 1971 direct from the estate.
The Wines
The first wine is the 2012 Dosio Barolo Fossati Riserva for $67.99 per bottle on a 3-pack.As most of you know, 2013 was the a highly rated vintage in Barolo. There are only a few cases left and I grabbed them for this offer. This wine is absolutely stunning. I just had this and it was fantastic.
This is one of those Baroli that reminds you that Barolo can be quite Burgundian in the right hands and with the right terroir.
The nose is really spectacular. Wafting with the familiar and classic aromas a classic Barolo lover wants and seeks. It has that power that you love to see but also the finesse and elegance. Wafting with the familiar and classic aromas a classic Barolo lover wants and seeksLots of really fine leather, chestnut, deep cherry, with cherry flowers, plum skin, lilacs, dried roses and a hint of spice. It opens stunningly over 7 hours. The nose becomes more and more encompassing over the seven hours. A wine to meditate with. Like binge-watching a Netlflix or Hulu series you can binge a great Barolo like this. Layer after layer adding new found depth. It is magic.
The palate is classic, classic, classic elegant Barolo but it also substantial heft and structure but still remains so fine and refined. Really perfect. Old school classic Barolo that reminds you of Burgundy. Just the most gorgeous sweet, young, super dense and packed fresh cherry fruit with great acids that make the mid come alive and turns the finish into a crescendo. It's still super fresh and almost young. The fruit is just right there and so fresh it's like it was just harvested. Really great complex spice on this that intermingles with all the other elements. Just an incredibly classy, elegant and very deep bottle of Barolo.
The finish is just so well balanced and persistent. Basically, cherry flavored crack cocaine. It's a wine that you just want to drink. First, it's so well made. Second, it's delicious. And finally, the elegance and class are just off the charts. I'm lucky to be able to sell the last few cases. This has well integrated tannins and the structure and balance to go another decade at least. I cannot overstate how good this wine is.
The second wine is the 2013 Dosio Barolo Fossati for $54.99 a bottle on a 4 pack purchase. There are only a few cases left and I grabbed them for this offer. It's an amazing value for a very well made wine. 2013's are a terrific vintage and when all is said and done I think It's better than 15 but maybe not 16. Legit. Truly legit. This is outstanding. Deep nose. Spellbinding. Roses, meeting road tar, loam, spice, glorious. Tea. The nose is really spectacular. Utterly classic and jumps out at you. Wafting with the familiar and classic aromas a Barolo lover wants and seeks. Tobacco, tar and insane cherries. Lots of really fine dried roses, deep cherry and a hint of spice. It opens stunningly over 2 hours.
The palate is classic, classic, classic elegant Barolo. Not modern global warming monster globby Barolo. But old school classic Barolo. Palate is an insane monster of deep glorious cherry fruit intermingled with spice and what purity. Sick definition and so clean. Big tannins that are sicko ripe. Unreal length. Goes toe to toe with the big boys. Length is crazy and pumps insane fruit. Wow. It's so deep and complex but insanely fresh. Just the most gorgeous sweet, young, fresh cherry fruit with great acid. It's still fresh. Really great spice on this that intermingles with the other elements. This wine has terrific density and perfect balance and will drink better over time as it unpacks a bit. You can drink it now with a decant.
The finish is just so persistent. Cherry licorice just lingers on the lips and coats the palate Just an incredibly classy, elegant bottle of Barolo. The finish is just so well balanced and persistent. It's a wine that you just want to drink. First, it's so well made. Second, it's delicious. And finally, the elegance and class are just off the charts. I'm lucky to be able to sell the last few cases. This has well integrated tannins and the structure and balance to go another decade at least. It is limited.
